The way I see it, there are a few things we define as "Love":
1. A chemical reaction in the brain based on attraction, which then gradually turns into a friendship based on mutual respect, shared history and parenthood, etc. That's "Romantic Love".
2. The instinctive drive to propagate the species, protect your offspring and give it the greatest chance of survival. That's the love of a parent.
3. "Brotherly love", which is really just our group-nature as a social species which recognises strength in number.
4. Then there is the choice to show and feel compassion by developing empathy for the situations of others, no matter their deeds, because you can have an inkling of what led them there.

Seems to me that, if we only do 1,2&3, we have no claim to place ourselves above animals. It's the CHOICE to feel compassion that defines "Humanity". Agree? Disagree?

I know those who just refuse to see any good in something they've already made up their minds about no matter what is shown to them won't listen to this, but this is to those who are open minded. There is a verse that was mistranslated. In the english Quran you find in Sura 4 that it states a man may "beat" his wife. The arabic word is daraba. If you look at this word in its root, and how it's used in the rest of the Quran, it has nothing to do with physically harming others. It does have to do with separating, which is a step from divorce. The first is to sleep separately, and at that point it's meant as to live separately, in separate homes. How can it suddenly change meaning on one verse? What do you think of this?

All of my collections of the Upanishads only contain portions of the Brhadaranyaka Upanishad, which I like very much. Is the whole thing pretty long? Is that why they only contain portions? How long is the whole thing?

I would love to find an English translation of the entire Upanishad online. Does anyone know a site?

Thanks!

And don't tell me that jesus and god are right and shouldn't be questioned. I want you to actually think about this and answer it from a non religious biased point of view. Imagine that you one day found out that your religion, and all of the stories of god and jesus and the bible were all made up stories. Would you feel cheated? Would you be upset that you wasted a lot of time in church or preaching to people about religion? I'm sure some of you would be pissed because of all the times you could have sinned but didn't.

I was just curious as to what both sides of the issue think. Both sides being: The Pro Modification and Con Modification.

I see totally faithful christians getting tats and peircings, and think it is just so great to see that they're not so conservative. That they're being about a new face to the modern Christian.

Then, I see how some people look down on it, both christians and secular. Mainly because you're supposed remain as you were made, we are temples. I also think it causes confusion among the "worldly" people, for that very same reason. I guess it makes it easier for them to come against our religion.

I'm asking because I'm looking into getting some tats myself.

Namely, should they be allowed to check a box on their tax forms that reads something like "check here if you do not want your tax dollars applied to religious organizations, religious education, religious symbols on government lands, and government funded religious programs"?

Wouldn't it be reasonable to allow Americans the right to refuse to pay for something they don't believe in?

Since the latest research strongly indicates that psychopathy is basically due to serotonin and dopamine imballances, that homosexuality and transsexuality are rooted in structural differences in the hypothalamus, and that even pedophilia is a biologically based mental disorder, what does that say about our willingness to punish rather than rehabilitate?

I've seen a lot of trolls post really funny things...I'm all in favor that. But some of the things that get posted around here are NOT funny, they are deeply hurtful.
Like someone earlier saying that people who can't procreate shouldn't be allowed to marry. As a woman unable to have children due to being abused as a small child, that really hurts.

Please be more careful about the 'jokes' you post.

Why do people post rubbish like that and find it funny?

B.A.'s believe in the bible and Catholics do as well. Both will quote Revelations saying "don't add or take away from this book" but one uses the traditional King James version while the other uses the apocrypha so doesn't that therefore proof that the point of the scripture in Revelations is just meant for the book of Revelations and not the entire bible

I posted this as an answer to someone else's question, but I thought I'd ask it here, since I'd like an answer. I really want to know if I'm wrong. Thanks! :)

Religion, even the word, makes my skin crawl and my hair stand on end. The war is on between so called good and so called evil and everyone's taking sides. This can only lead to one thing. One thing that they all want- the end of the world. Well, the way I see it, if you want peace, stay out of the battle. If you want war, take sides and get bloody. All I can say, is religion's not my idea of positive thinking. It's mass hypnosis and it's dangerous.

On CNN's 'God's Christian Warriors' tonight, it was stated that moderates are now the target of these extremists. Moderates are just here- we don't take sides, we don't get bloody, we keep our mouths shut and stay out of the battle. Well they want warriors! How can there be armageddon without EVERYONE involved?

I want peace. U?

Ok I have a lot of questions. Please answer truthfully and seriously.

1. I sometimes find it hard to believe. I mean I go to a Christian school and I got to church and I say I believe but I have doubts. People have told me that its normal to have doubts but I’m scared God will send me to hell for questioning him. Am I being paranoid?

2. I totally believe in abstinence until I’m married but how do I tame my sexual desires? A preacher once said that God will fulfill our needs and desires but does that mean masturbation is wrong?

3. God doesn’t want us to sin. But where do you draw the line? Is cursing a sin? What about the occasional drink or smoke? Is having a crush on someone that you can not have a sin?

HELP!!!!

Im actually being serious. think about it

1)both could be altered at any time by anyone
2)we have no proof that either is telling the truth
3)they could both be biased

for all we know. both could be full of lies or they could be made up so how is the bible anymore credible than wikipedia?

I was born into a a Catholic home, and went to a convent.

The Mass (at that time, was in Latin), I could not understand a word. The nuns made me so scared of God that I only prayed to Mary. I alswys get the giggles when I am nervous, ever time I HAD to go to confession, which was every Friday, I used to giggle through the whole procedure and spend ages 'saying penance'.

I spent three hours on my knees on Good Friday, or it was a 'mortal sin'. Because I was a bit michievous, the nuns made my school life a misery.Unlike some people, I honestly can't say, I'd love to be back at school. I hated it. I suffered from a terrible rejection problem.

I lived in Europe for 3 years, became an athiest. Yes, I read all the books, Ayan Randd, Velokofsky, you name it. But it did'nt make me any happier inside myself.

Nine years later I lived in Australia, and I met some Born Again Christians. I just KNEW, by watching them and what they had, I desperately needed. Iv'e never looked back.

Okay, why do I need God? I don't want to be one of 'God's Warriors.' If there is a Christ, I doubt very much that it was a man. If there is a Christ, it's above us all, but doesn't squash us. It doesn't judge or condemn or inflict its own will on us. It doesn't demonize everything from sex to free-thinking, and it certainly doesn't take sides or pit brother against brother.

So why do I need God when the 'God' being exalted all around me, by those who think they're doing God a service by condemning others, is a terrorist? Why do I need God, when God is the cause of all the hate I see all around me, threatening my freedom and dictating my life, through his 'warriors?'

If there's a God its love.
