The ACTUAL definition of a cult is - religious body of worship and its adherents

But society's definition is more along the lines of .....Cult - any religion other than mine.

These days, people use the word "cult" as a means to scare other people away from a particular faith they don't like or understand. I read on here all the time that "Mormons are a cult", "Jehovah's Witnesses are a cult", "Catholics are a cult", yada yada yada

It just doesn't make any sense to me. Just because a faith doesn't coincide with your own personal beliefs doesn't make it a cult.

No where in the Bible does it say that the Earth is 6000 years old. The way they came up with that time is by looking at the begats and calculating the age of the Earth based on the number of generations in the begats. However, since the begats do not begin with Adam and Eve, you have a blank spot. You have Adam and Eve, I think that some of Adam and Eve's kids are mentioned as well, then theres a missing piece of history, then the begats start. Well being that it doesn't say in the Bible how much time is in that missing chunck of history, there is no way to calculate how old the Earth is by using the Bible. So why do they use the bible to calculate the Earth's age????

that you are really glad that you read, because they made a significant impact on you, or changed the way you think about something? For me it was The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan, because I read it right after leaving the mormon church and it told me exactly the opposite of what I had been told my whole life. What about you?

Please don't accuse me of discrimination. I'm trying to be fair.

It seems perfectly sensible to expect the religious to be able to see from a non-religious point of view. We atheists/agnostics base what we know on what we see around us, much as the religious do in their daily lives. All humans do it; therefore, the religious should be able to grasp the non-religious perspective. I find, however, that they are FREQUENTLY unable.

So let's look at the other side.

The religious should be able to understand why it is difficult for an atheist/agnostic to see from the perspective of faith. Most of us think it is silly and ignorant (whether it is or not isn't my point) because it is based on what is unseen, on one of many holy texts in existence that all claim to be right, etc.

So, how can the religious expect us to see from their faith perspective if they refuse or are unable to see from a non-religious perspective based on observation?

Or is a better question: do you UNDERSTAND evolution?

On the micro level it is no less than fact. With a little understanding in Mendelian genetics and some logic anyone can understand the basic mechanisms of evolution - mutations occur (fact), and make up the diversity in an organism Natural selection, genetic drift, and gene flow are not hard to comprehend.

When two or more groups are isolated from each other (most likely for geographical reasons), the small differences will accumulate and eventually speciation will occur. You do not need a PhD to understand this.

Some people say evolution is only a theory, and that it has no evidence. Well... theories need a mass of evidence, and evolution provides that. Whoever told them otherwise was flatout lying, or ignorant.

So, I propose that if you do not "believe in" evolution, that you either say

1. "I do not understand evolution"

or

2. "I do not want to believe in evolution"

What are your thoughts?

I am sorry if it sounded like I meant that all Catholics are that way but growing up Catholic many of my friends were confused and thought that Mormons were Christians. But Mormons don't believe that Jesus is the only Son of God as we declare every Sunday at Mass. Not only that but Mormons defend polygamy and polygamy was never practiced in Christianity. But why are some Catholics ignorant of other religions? There is a big difference between being a kind hearted Christian and a member of a womanizing cult. Is there not?

Now, I believe in evolution, but there are scientific theories that I happen to think are wrong though. For example, I don't buy the dark matter or dark energy theories, I don't buy the theory that there are multiple universes, I don't buy the theory that there are millions of other advanced civilizations in our universe. However, I don't HATE these theories with everything in me. Although I don't believe in these theories, I don't get filled with absolute rage when my teachers teach them to me. I just quietly disagree and move on with my life. You people though don't just disagree with evolution, you get filled with bitter hatred by the mere mention of these theories. A few Christians have even dedicated their entire lives to protesting this theory. What is the big deal?????

The reason that most Americans don't want Mitchell Romney as President is because they are worried that he will embarrass the United States by letting his Mormonism adversely affect his decision making process. Mr. Romney hasn't tried to hide this fact and openly flaunts his Mormonism in the media.
