No where in the Bible does it say that the Earth is 6000 years old. The way they came up with that time is by looking at the begats and calculating the age of the Earth based on the number of generations in the begats. However, since the begats do not begin with Adam and Eve, you have a blank spot. You have Adam and Eve, I think that some of Adam and Eve's kids are mentioned as well, then theres a missing piece of history, then the begats start. Well being that it doesn't say in the Bible how much time is in that missing chunck of history, there is no way to calculate how old the Earth is by using the Bible. So why do they use the bible to calculate the Earth's age????

You also forgot, that by counting back through scriptural genealogy, you only arrive at the starting point of humans. The earth is reasonably as old or older than science speculates.
I think this point has been made hundreds of times. The fact that the Bible is not meant to be a science book, should be taken into consideration. If each of the creative "days" is not meant to be a literal 24hr time period, then science and the Bible a not in disagreement at all when it comes to pondering the age of our planet.
Apparently many of us here, are in agreement about this point. I hope that some of the people who attack the scriptures based upon those that are more rigid as regards scripture, can take note that not all Bible believers are fundies.
Yet, although I disagree with the fundamentalists, they are certainly within their rights...... to believe what they will...

I agree with you. Not only is it inaccurate to calculate the age of the earth that way, the "begats" don't necessarily mean that the person who was begotten was the child of the begatter. It can mean that the person was a descendant of the person, like a grand child or great grandchild.
However, certain sects and denominations think that they can literally use the Bible to calculate in this manner. That's how they believe and it's really not important if they think that way and it's really not important if they are right. It's irrelevant to my faith how old the earth is.

The bible gives us the date when Adam was created. 4026 BCE according to the biblical calender.
Since Adan is the first person to record what happened and why (Geneses 1:1-5:1) and then was later put onto paper by Moses in 1513BCE.
The creative days were only 6,000 years each for a total of 6 since it is said that Jehovah has stopped the creation and went and rested from creation. We are in that day now, the 7th day which is soon to end.
How many millions or billion of years passed in between these creative days, scientist can only estimate, while the entire heavenly organization including Jehovah and Jesus, know for sure.

read Genesis 1:2 that shows that the earth was already there before God shaped it as it is. We dont know the age of the earth because this shows the earth was there already and doesnt say for how long. The waters and the surface were laid and separated during the 6 days God created.

Belief in a literal seven(six actually) day creation + Adam + .... ~= 6000 years
As far as the earth is concerned the age can be calculated, but not necessarily can the waters.

Are you trying to make an excuse? Either way the Earth is millions of years old. Your bible among most others is based around astrological pagan beliefs and myths.

Actually all those begats include Adam and Eve.
See Genesis chapter 5.
Remember that science proves the earth can't be older than 100,000 years or so.
The Moon shots proved that the Moon is something like 10,000 years old or less.

Unfortunately there are still those who insist earth is 6000 yrs old.
Yet one can use the bible itself to dispute that figure by millions of years.... w/wo it, bible should be used as a moral guide not a 'litteral guide'.
update: Pastorart - there is no science that supports your view of the years u speak of... u are in fact lying about that.

oh I see what your saying
I think that you are thinking about the 7 time periods talked about in Revelations. (Seals). There was speculation that each of the time periods were 1000 years but have never confirmed that.
Also I agree that the materials used to create the earth are much older than 6,000 years old.

Of course Earth is not 6000 years old. It is more than that. I don't think anyone says Earth is 6000 years old. People say it goes to millions/billions. Get your facts right.
