I was reading that Joseph Smith and Brigham Young had many wives. I know the flds practice polygamy. Mainline Mormons don't practice polygamy but follow both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are the true Mormons. The FLDS church's history began when a polygamist community in Utah known as Short Creek was excommunicated from the church for refusing to denounce polygamy. Wilford Woodruff, who was the prophet of the LDS church received a revelation that plural marriage would be discontinued. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young both consistently taught about continuing revelation.

Mainstream mormons are the true mormons. Both groups started out as one religion when joseph smith and brigham young were alive. But when polygamy stopped being practiced, some people continued with it, saying joseph smith said god commanded it, and (whoever the prophet was at the time who said god wanted polygamy to stop) was a false prophet. They then broke off and formed their own group (the FLDS or Fundamentalist latter day saints) that practices very early day mormon practices...not only polygamy but they also have very amish-similar lifestyles (pioneer-ish clothing, no makeup for girls, etc) although not completely the same. They have their own prophet who was chosen because of his bloodline going back to that of jo smith.
Mainstream mormons do not affiliate themselves with the FLDS mormons today.

It what I have heard is correct, although Jospeh Smith III was declared his father's sucessor, the Community of Christ was not organized until 1860 and was actually established by Emma Hale Smith's second husband, not by anyone from the Smith line. Further, there is a very simple reason why Joseph and Emma's children ended up as part of the Community of Christ, Emma chose not to follow the rest of the Saints to Utah, and the children were too young to go themselves. In reality, Joseph's children did not really have a choice which church they joined. To me it makes no sense to look at which church Joseph's children were a part of to determine correctness. The fundemental difference, and what you really should consider, is that whether you believe that the prophet is called according to his ancestry or not. I personally believe that the LDS perspective on the calling of a prophet is more in line with the teachings in the Bible and the Book of Mormon. Although God has called prophets that were sons of other prophets (i.e. Nephi, Alma), there is no history in the Bible or the Book of Mormon that demonstrates that this is the primary consideration.

The Mormons have so many secrets and lies, they may still have many wives, they believe like the muslims that they will have many wives in the next life if they are worthy.
Also that they can become gods and godesses of their own worlds.
The prophet Josephet Smith taught the North Star has a planet revolving around it called Kolob. Jesus lives there according to their teaching.
For a good time look up The Salamander Society. It's like the National Lampoon for Mormonism.
Polygamy must have been great fun, it got Joseph Smith put in Jail where the fathers of many girls shot him DEAD. They call it martyred or assassinated. That fool was shot.

From the late 1830s to as late as 1907 mormons practiced polygamy as the ONLY way to salvation, despite the Manifesto of 1890. It remains in the Doctrine and Covenants Section 132 to this day. The Church also changed it position on allowing blacks and the priesthood in 1978.
The Fundamentalist church did not 'break off' from the Salt Lake group. They practice the frontier version of polygamy and racism to this day except they have pickup trucks and cell phones. They consider the Salt Lake church as apostate.
It's all in the point of view and who gets to write history.

According to the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, a person's religion is whatever they say it is ... they both say they're Mormon, so I respect that ... also check out http://www.mormonfundamentalism.org ... if you email them the guy there will be happy to answer any of your questions (the website's creator is part of the Apostolic United Brethren, another Mormon polygamous group -- there are several -- I think the AUB have about 9000 members scattered around the American West and western Canada, some in their own towns where they have all their own farms, businesses, etc)

At one point, about 3-5% of the men in the church had more than one wife. Two or three had many wives, like Brigham Young. Most had two or at the most, three.
But, when the government threatened the very existence of the church, God finally excused the church from plural marriage.
