Recently, a church near me has changed their church slogan and put billboards around the city saying "Church doesn't suck". In this advertising, they changed their outreach for people to come to church as they are, and not worry about what they have done in the past. They want to knock down the thoughts that non-christians have about the church, and rather than "doing" church, they want to "be" the church.

I am a christian, and dont' think this is a good way to market a church. What do other christians think about this?

Have you tried to find out where your money is going? while charitable organisations in the west are honest and do it in good faith the problem comes up when the money goes to those countries. most of it is pocketed by the politicians in those 3rd world countries. most of it goes to fund their private armies and to build koranic schools that breed muslim fundamentalists.
when the money reaches these countries the western groups in large lose control of it.
i have travelled widely in these countries and seen it all.

I wonder how we can genuinely go about helping the poor in those lands when corruption is a way of life in those lands?

People say that atheist (like myself) have no real proof of knowing there is no god... what do they have? Papers and books written hundreds of years ago? For christians, it was Moses wasn't it? who was given the ten commandments...up on a mountain...where nobody else was around.... Now that's not very relyable is it? If it is faith that runs you, it's blind faith with no real back bone.

If Jesus were here today I dont believe that he would be rich like the pastors that we see in our Mega-Churches and on Tv. Why is it that these churches feel like a pyramid scheme? By the way, I am a Christian as in I believe in God and what the Bible says. But I do have a problem with organized religion. Do you think it is wrong for these pastors to prey on the poor ,who have barely any money, by telling them that if they tithe God will bless them. Come on, these guys are RICH. When Jesus walked the earth he did not have a mansion. He did not charge for his sermon. I just dont agree with it. I feel like many of our churches are becoming corrupt. A tithe is good if its put into the right hands, to assist the poor, or less fortunate. If put into the wrong hands it is nothing more than a pyramid scheme. I know I may be bashed for this but I just see it with my own eyes. What do other Christians think, am I wrong for feeling this way?

It doesn't make sense because Jesus said we should loves others as we love ourselves.

I dont' mean those that get in your face and are overly preachy, I mean someone you may know as an acquaintance that is a certain religion, you know they are, but they don't really discuss it. An example is that I practice the muslim faith, but it never comes up, nor do I bring it up, unless someone just constantly gets on me about it. I don't drink for that reason, and if somebody asks why I say it's somewhat of a personal/religious thing, you know....some brush it off, others try to dig deeper, which may be an attempt just to talk ****. I'm more or less live and let live, but if you purposely antagonize because you have a problem with me being muslim or whatever, that's a whole other ball game.

well, curiosity got the best of me when a question popped into my head. I did some reading on wikipedia.org about the history of the "virgin mary" and joseph.

My first question is..... Mary & Joseph were married. It has been tradition for years to comsummate the marriage through sexual intercourse after the ceremony. How could Mary be a virgin when it is more common to have sex soon after marriage? Going along with this idea would it not make more sense that the translation was incorrect in that the word should've been "young woman" and not "virgin?" Surely some word play could've been used... what's so miraculous about a young woman giving birth?

Also, while reading about Mary one part of the page said that Joseph actually had children from a previous marriage. So Mary wasn't his first wife. Didn't they consider divorce a sin? And why is Mary looked upon so highly when she is the 2nd wife to a man in a time when divorce was not looked upon favorably? Didn't they consider that

Which parts of the Bible are supposed to be taken literally and which are supposed to be taken as stories?

I keep hearing that there are parts of the Bible which are Laws for Humanity to follow and that they are supposed to be taken literally.
Then I hear that there are parables which we are supposed to take as figurative stories and are supposed to learn only the morals of the story.

So which parts are which?

...Your god is the "one true god', when so, so, soooo many came before it. Furthermore, your whole religion is the jumbled mess that came out a retarded -faith-based chop-shop. Compiled of the beliefes of many religions that came before yours.

I've often been told on this very site that God has hardened my heart. Why would he mess with my free will? I can see he is a made-up god like the rest of them by myself, thankyouverymuch.

A lot of people are pointing to the existence of Israel as a sign that the End Times are approaching. But in that case, why didn't they occur in 1099, when the Crusaders captured Jerusalem from the Islamic fatimids?

That year, Pope Urban II wrote to the King of France that he was confidently expecting Christ to return in the next few years. Needless to say, he didn't.

Israel's been around for nearly 60 years now. 1948 would have been a good time for him to arrive. He didn't. 1967 would have done. No show. Even 2001 could have been appropriate, but no Jesus.

What makes you think he's coming anytime soon? Pope Urban II thought his arrival was imminent. That was a thousand years ago.
