The ask God answer was an interesting. You can ask God by reading the Bible. Personally I like the Roman Road and use the ABC's of witnessing to help children understand it while they're still little, and to help them talk to their friends. Here's a couple of sites that show both:

If Christians feel like this is something they're supposed to do, I don't know why my phone isn't ringing off the hook with Telemarketers for Jesus. JWs bang on doors for exactly this reason, it's a requirement that goes with the belief.
It shouldn't come as a job to do. It comes from the heart, courtesy of the Holy Spirit working within you. Don't think that as soon as you become a Christian, you're "on assignment" from God. If you will just remember that neither you nor the proselytizee can claim anything from God as a result of your "works," then the only thing left -- on both sides -- is a simple reliance on the Lord and what He gives both of you. Ephesians 2:8 should explain this clearly enough.

I was going to ask this question too. I personally think that it depends on the audience. you would witness to a teenager in a much different way that you would witness to an elderly person. One thing that I refuse to do when witnessing, is to bring the fear of Hell, fire and brimstone. Christ never told us to do this. He told us to go into all the world and share the gospel, not hell. This approach only turns more people away than it does scare them into the arms of Christ. Christ's message was about love and forgiveness, no matter what we have done. When the world has turned its back on us, Christ is there to receive us.

The way Jesus and his disciples did.
They went in the marketplace, from door to door, and just walking down the road.
We have to take every opportunity to witness to those ones' we meet. Since the message (good news of God's Kigndom) is such and important one, you should not give up or let up.
Witnessing by example is always a good way to witness as well. But we must practice what we PREACH. So just practicing, and not sharing with others is not enough.

There is no best way to witness, we are all called to be living sacrifices.
Romans 12:1
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
That the outwardly life would represent the inward spirit. People should beable to see us apart from the world.
I find it easier to connect with some people rather than others. ( as I am sure we all do) For christians I can be more blunt, use scriptures, and tend to me more direct.
My still in couseling unbelievers tend to lean more on ideologies and philosphies and not to turn them off with a religious spirit.
If we look at the works of Christ, we can see how he treated the unbelievers, the sick, the weak, the poor in spirit. And see he showed compassion, he often spoke in parables to get his point accross, allowing people to grasp spiritual concepts intertwined in parables.
Remember it is not our job to save anybody, leave room for the work of Christ. It is not for us to call others to act like us, but to emulate the work and teachings of Christ. We are merely his sowers.
1 Cor. 3:6-9 I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.

By our actions and our lives. If and when the time comes to witness verbally with a certain individual than trust the Holy Spirit for the right words.

Preach to them saying something to the effect of "Repent, for the Kingdom of the Heavens has drawn near" and then direct them to the Bible in order to prove why this is so. That's what Jesus did everyday.
Hey, I know some people that do that in my neighborhood.
I think they're called Jehovah's Witnesses.

The best way? Through your actions. Make people wonder why you're so at peace, and so kind. Make them SEE that you're a Christian, rather than HEARING that you're a Christian.
We should be SEEN as Christians first, and heard later.
"Preach the Gospel always. If necessary, use words."
