If a Christian doesn't defend a person they know to be innocent from untruthfull accusations and persecution ae they akin to the pharisees hidding behind the law or Pilate accommodating the masses?

It would depend on the Christian's motivation for not speaking up...you cannot know what is in someone's heart.

A person not defending innocents is called 'Timid". Not everyone turns into a hero just by following a particular religion even though that is expected of him.

This is a great question. Maybe it could be considered a sin but, I think that it would not only be unfair to the person who was innocent but you'd be imprisoning yourself. Knowing that you could have helped someone, and not helping them, is something that you will have to live w/ for the rest of your life. Even if you ask the Lord to forgive you, he'd forgive you, but could you ever forgive yourself?

It happens many times. Even today a christian behaved that way against me. Though I am disturbed by that behaviour, I accept that many christians are hyprocites.

Not defending someone you know is innocent is wrong no matter what religion follow. Even if you have NO religion, it's wrong.
