since when was this country a christian nation? did we have a vote and decide on a national religion? was i in a coma when this happend? i was under the impression that this country was founded on the belief of freedom of religion for all. and going along with this idea america was founded on the idea of a separation of church and state. since the state controls public schools there is no reason to have prayer and religion in public schools. thats why the church has private schools owned by the diocese. was i wrong?

do you think that Paul simply gave the "church" some structure because the people were complaining and arguing about what to do and how to do it?

We have this debate going on in America on how we should treat gay people. Are they sinners? Should they be allowed the same rights as heterosexuals- such as marraige? or serving in the military?
Is the debate fueled soley by theists? People who believe that god told them directly that gay people are sinners? Or are there some atheists who believe in stripping gay people of their rights as well?

I've had this feeling that in 30 years we'll look back on all these gay marriage bans like we look back upon how americans felt about interracial marriage 40 years ago.

close friend of mine feels divorce is very iminent. She had two very bad long term relationships with guys who had drug issues; the very next (and first) guy she dated without issues, proposed to her within 6 months and they were married. She got married for completely the wrong reason and is suffering from that. Nice guy, just no feelings for him. She's not sure how to reconcile this with her religion (catholic) or spend the rest of her life in a miserable marriage which is unfair to her husband, who could have a much better life.

Quran Sura 4:34: “Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in their sleeping places and ****beat them***; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.”

who is possibly interested in incorpoating Buddhism into her Christian beliefs? She is elderly and still a devout Christian, but has recently become interested in Buddha. She has bought herself two figurines of Buddha for herself, two for me, one for one of her sons, and mentioned to another of her sons that she feels like she should give him one of hers, since she has two. She hasn't done anything else with this new interest so far, but I don't know if this is the limit on her interest, or if she just has no way of learning more.

Christians who feel the necessity for all schoolchildren to have prayer and Bible study in school would surely have no objections to the teacher forcing Christian children to direct their prayers to Zeus, or to have their Christian children educated in the Quran, right?

ok i'll start!!
about evolution in Islam, first , we muslims believe that God is the Absolute Controller of every event that has taken place, is taking place, and will take place.
There are many theories of evolution. Some of them are acceptable according to Islam, while there are others that are not acceptable.
If by evolution one means the development and growth that God Almighty has placed in the nature of His creation, then this is acceptable and the Qur'an itself talks about it.
for example, God has power to say "Be" and everything will become. But He created the heaven and earth in six days, as mentioned in the Qur'an .
The word "six days" does not necessarily mean six days of 24 hrs duration each. It could also mean six periods whose duration is known to God alone.
The theory of evolution that postulates that the whole creation came by itself and nature evolved itself by mutation, selection and fixation, et cetera, is not acceptable in Islam.
to be continued.....
