If not, then why did so many Christians say it was ok for THEIR prayers to be taught in schools?

Erika - How are we a Christian nation? Last time I checked this country had no official religion, and you were free to choose your own.

Athiests_are_dumb: Love thy neighbor, remove the plank from thine own eye, judge not lest ye be judged...oh yeah, and don't be a hypocrite.

Prayer doesn't have to be taught. Schools should teach education (you know, reading, writing, and arithmetic). Prayer should not be denied if someone wants to pray no matter how they pray and who they pray to. As long as there are tests in school, there Will always be prayer!

I don't think prayers of any kind should be taught in public schools... but if students want to pray (no matter the religion) they should be allowed to, like during lunch or something.

I also think religions should be learned about in the classroom just so students can widen their minds (but not to try and convert anyone to a certain religion). I took a World History class my freshman year of high school, and I remember learning about Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Yet Christianity was not touched on, not that I can recall.

I think if public schools are going to talk about religion, they should talk about all of the main religions, as well as touch base with some of the smaller ones.

(By the way, I'm a moderately conservative Christian).

Prayer is prayer; both Christians and Muslims pray to the same true God.
I see no wrong in Christians saying that it's ok for prayers in Public schools just as I see no wrong if Muslims say the same; but my dear sir, this has never been an issue; neither Christians or Muslims have fought for prayers in school.
Personally, I don't think that prayer is a public School issue; in a country like the US, religion and politics would make very bad medicine.

Because the American schools were based on a simple prayer in school, in the beginning when this Nation was started. If your an American, I bet you any money that your Grandparents honored prayer time at school. Muslims should be allowed to say their prayers, but knowing some negative people against prayer, you would even cause problems for them. Any person on Earth who wants to say a prayer at school, should be allowed to. What is this world coming to when negative people , condemn praying ???

NO!

For my Xian youth, a provisional answer to the 2nd question is that i'd had essentially no exposure to non-Xians prior to my 2nd year of college. The very concept of non-Xian prayer had never occurred to me. Had you asked me back then, the scales would have fallen off my eyes, and i would have seen your point immediately.

When i was in my late teens, i saw a TV show sponsoring a drive to return prayer to public school. I talked about the issue with my uncle, a Presbyterian minister. He made it clear that the religion they were preaching was not his kind of religion; that school prayer was a "non-issue," and that anybody could pray any time they wanted. In time, i developed my own understanding of the Establishment Clause, and realized that private prayer was *not* forbidden.

I cannot speak for those Xians who cannot see the unfairness of having their prayers, their commandments, their creation myths, and their sexual decrees installed in taxpayer-supported schools. I was not one of them.

I dont think any prayer should be taught in schools since there is such a mix of religions. Kids who aren't Christians would be offended (if they were old enough to know better) and the others would simply be brainwashed.

No prayers should be taught in public schools, especially Muslim ones. Praying should be allowed though if it doesn't interfere with class-time like before a test or before a meal.

May God Bless you.

ok erica this is such a nice question , but i want to say something , if we managed to teach Muslims , their prayers , Christians , their own prayers , Jews their own prayers this would just be aw some , but i think America is heading to be no religion country and this is sooo bad
there is only one god , let each one prays as he likes and it will be just great to pray , and it's not begging as some answerer said , praying to god is the highest spiritual phase any body can have , in Muslim prayer you are connected to god with no borders , five times a day not only when you need something you go quickly pray
it requires purity and cleanliness in body and soul so it makes person washes all corps 5 times daily to meet god clean and pure , so it would be beautiful for ever body to learn and to feel that connection with god
and for the answerer who suffers when she prays at school , i think this is good evidence that what you are talking about is just impossible , we wish that they only leave Muslims alone not teaching their prayers , cuz god receive nothing when we pray we take the whole pleasure , in quoran god says , i created people just to pray' sometime you will all know

i believe what erika was speaking of was the fact that our country was BASED on christianity. however, i don't believe in teaching any prayer in any public school. if a child wishes to say a silent prayer, that's fine. but it should not be part of the school day in general.

I'm sure Muslims would like THEIR prayers taught in schools. Since it is a violation of the law seperating church and state NO prayers are taught in schools. Schools have enough trouble teaching what they're supposed to teach. I prefer to teach my son what prayers I feel he MUST know.
