You should not pray in repetitious phrases. ie hail marys, or meditative chanting.

The "Our Father" prayer is a model by which we should use as a template for our prayers. But really, prayer is just being honest with God regarding what is going on. This can be in praise, repentance, confession, intercession, or petition.
If you have Christ in your heart as Lord and Savior, the line is open and ready for calls.--no charge.

Hypocrites do this pray in public so they can make themselves seem to be good and faithful when it is a complete lie. When you pray in private then he knows you are sincere and not just mumbling to get acknoledgement.Vain repetion is what catholics to they wear out the words in public and render them meaningless until they realy find christ it has a whole new meaning. So when it says to pray woth his will it the correct way because you are praying according to a righteous view so before you pray keep all of that verse on
9-13 in mind or else your prayers are selfish and are not toward him.

here it is in the message bible:

5"And when you come before God, don't turn that into a theatrical production either. All these people making a regular show out of their prayers, hoping for stardom! Do you think God sits in a box seat?
6"Here's what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won't be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace.

7-13"The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They're full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don't fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:

Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what's best— as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You're in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You're ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.
This scripture teaches us to pray the right way, and gives examples.

Its a passage of teaching on prayer.

Don't make a big external show to impress God or men. Then state what you need simply. The Lord's prayer bit just covers core aspects of prayer:
- express desire that God's reputation be respected on Earth
- express desire for bringing Gods will and rule into our lives
- ask for needs
- confess sins and also forgive others
- pray for protection and deliverance from Satan's supernatural forces

Dear Gabby,

The section of Scripture you are quoting is known as the Lord's prayer. In this section Jesus teaches His disciples (followers) how to pray and we learn some very practical lessons from it.

The first part v.5-8 reminds us that prayer is between us and God. We ought not to pray to be seen, or for the attention to be put upon us- prayer is centered towards God.

V.9-13 can be summarized by the Acronym ACTS

Adoration- We adore and recognize who God is when we pray to Him. (His name is hollowed).

Confession- We confess our sins to God and although we dont' follow all his ways perfectly we know that the blood of Jesus Christ covers our sins.

Thanksgiving- We give thanks to God for everything that we have, and keep our hearts thankful.

Supplication- We ask God for our needs and trust Him to provide.

Hope that helps. Seriously, feel free to email me with more specific questions- this is a very short summary...

Personally it teaches me a lot as to my attitude towards prayer. And it's very practical we can all go to our rooms and share our hearts with our Heavenly Father who cares...

Kindly,

Nickster

the pharasees and others of the time often went out in public wailing and lamenting in supposed prayer, but it was all for show to make themselves look rather pius.
The pagans of the time chanted to idols - making no sense whatsoever.

Jesus says pray in this way:
The "our Father" as it's come to be known is an example.
ie
I know You are in heaven and You are holy above all
I am asking for Your will not only in my life but in all of creation
I know that "what is loosed on earth will be loosed in heaven"
Supply my daily needs
Forgive my sins in Your mercy
I will forgive others as well because I understand that I can't be forgiven unless I do.
Keep me from making wrong decisions and help me to stay in Your perfect will
Keep me safe.
amen

for those who are going to say repetetive prayer is wrong......was jesus wrong when he prayed more than once the same words in the garden of gethsemane? the lord is teaching us how to pray here, the repetetive prayer is aimed more at the pagans who would repeat the same rambling words to false gods. other occasions show that there is no harm in repetitious prayer,sa i already pointed out jesus did this.

If you pray in public places to be seen, of men and to receive praise from men for how holy you make out to be, you have your reward and God will not be a part of hearing or answering such prayers.
You are to pray in private with God as the only hearer of your prayer. Your prayer is to be sincere and to God, without recognition from man.

Matthew 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

it means nothing - just the usual jumble of words and numbers which are usually followed by pages of cut-and-paste nonsense... yep as suspected... the cut-and-pasters just can't resist (see below). A cut and paste religion for a cut and paste God followed by people with cut and paste minds.
