If you go by your teaching, why is it then, that most muslim men, esp in countries like Afganistan, Pakistan, Iran etc beat up their women and daughters to death? Why is it OK to punish the women for the crimes they did not commit sometimes by 'honor killing' or group rape? Why is it OK that the men can treat the women worse than animals and burn them alive? Is this part of your teachings too? Don't get me wrong. I'm not against muslim people, but I have a hard time agreeing with the teachings, and many times, I question their integrity.

Look at your own backyard first, then compare your statistics with a Muslim country.
4 million American women experience a serious assault by a partner during an average 12-month period.
On the average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day.
http://www.ndvh.org/educate/abuse_in_america.html
Sura 4:34 states
Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their, beds (and last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance): for Allah is Most High, Great (above you all). I've answered this question before and I'll answer it again. First off make sure you copy the text correctly. Next..
In Islam a husband is considered the head of the family. He knows what is best for the family and the wife is required to obey him. If a wife commits a mistake, the husband warns her of her mistake. If she commits the same mistake, the husband warns her again and again. If she insists on repeating the mistake, the husband then turns his back to her in bed and gives her the 'silent treatment'. If then she repeats the mistake, the husband can beat her the way he would beat a child, in a place were it doesn't hurt and doesn't offend, as a way of showing her right from wrong, so as to guide her along the right path.
Good Muslim wives obey their husbands fully and do not even come close to the silent treatment part.
As for Muslim husbands who beat up their wives, these are a disgrace to Islam and I am ashamed to call them Muslims. Clearly they have misunderstood the ruling as many people have.
I am a Muslim and my husband treats me in the most respectful and caring manner.
I really wish you guys would read properly and understand before making judgments.

Perhaps you'd like to go and read the history behind this particular Surah and verse? You might actually learn something. And frankly speaking, there are plenty of Christian men (and others) that think they can beat the tar outta their women here in the USA for absolutely no reason at all. At least with Muslims the Quran and Prophet have ordered the man to tap gently if his wife is cheating and basically being a miserable excuse of a human being. But of course you don't read the history, nor try to learn the Arabic meaning of such things. You're in it to berate others. What a contribution to the human race you are.

Please post your source.
The translation is a bit off, and I assume because you don't know Arabic, you don't really know any better. I don't blame you for that!
However, if you are truly interested in finding out what it means, you should spend more time figuring out what it meant to the people living during the time of the Prophet (PBUH). What good is a message delivered from God if it doesn't make much sense to the people receiving / accepting it.
Salam!

Lol I have a friend here on answers who is all about women's rights but somehow feels the wife beating is not hard so it is okay that a man can beat his wife... There is no explanation for the thinking of some people only God can reveal his truth and many are not interested in the truth.

I am not an expect on Islam but growing up, some of my best friend were Muslims. I don't think that any respected Muslim would strike his wife.
I don't know where and correct me if am wrong please..but as I was listening to my CD bible, an old testament passage said for Christians to destroy those who would try to pull them from their faith.
Now is that meant literally?, I hope not and I don't think your passage is meant literally, either.

I have seen Muslims here state that you are only to beat your wife "lightly", and only after a warning, and cutting her off in bed. And that you may use a stick, but only a small stick.
I think that any person who believes in force and aggression in their personal life would have no problem extending that belief into community values, which is what is happening in many Muslim countries.

What's the problem? Who was that teacher who slept with a 13 year old kid? Now had her husband beaten the crap out of her during a commercial break in One Tree Hill, maybe it would have saved him, his kids, that kid, that kid's parents, and a school board some trouble.
I meat AMerican women all the time, and my first thought with some of them is, "Man, that woman's husband needs to beat the living &*^$ out of her just once, and they'd both be much happier." There's this one blond chick who comes to our gym, and she is the biggest liar, and she's nasty, and she thinks she's great and you can tell her husband is just at the end of his rope and I think, "BOy, if only he would stick her face through a TV set then kick her around the living room a while, she'd straighten up."
YOu know what. She would. And she'd be happier to.
Admittedly this is the weaker of my 2 arguments, and I should have stuck with the 13 year old kid thing.

I just checked that sura buddy
and i think you might have made a little bit of that up (or you got it off the Internet),
because that's not what mine says.
Read it in Arabic first then come ask a question about this sura (verse)..that is if you even have one.
Because in Arabic its pure and makes complete sense.
God Bless
