Look at the polls in Europe. Look at the percentage of atheists and agnostics in America that have slowly been rising these last few decades.

Why do you think this is?

Does the doctrine of "be a Christian or burn in Hell forever when you die even if you're a good person" have anything to do with it?

if we know smoking will kill us, and we keep doing so until we die from it, (if that ends up being the cause) is it suicide?

Or do you mumble it under your breath when someone asks you about your religion? Did you always feel this way? If not, what changed how you feel about your atheism?

Personally, I'm very proud to be able to call myself an atheist. I was raised in a Jewish home but always knew in the back of my mind that I didn't actually believe any of it. I stopped considering myself Jewish in my teens but never said anything about it to anyone else, not because I was ashamed but because I didn't know how they would react. Finally I just decided that I didn't really care what people had to say about my beliefs (or lack thereof) and their reactions weren't my problem. Now, I'll tell anyone who asks that yes, I am an atheist. You can either deal with it and respect me regardless or move along.

That's my story, what's yours?

I know a amount of persecution goes on against religious types, but look at this verse:

"If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you... because they do not know Him who sent Me"

That's Jesus talking, and Jesus was definitely persecuted.

Now then...

How many Christians do you know that lived like Jesus did, and follow his law to the letter?

Christians aren't persecuted because there's nothing to persecute, most Christians don't follow the bible as well as they should and an absolutely horrendous amount of them are hypocrites.

How do Muslims reconcile the contradiction that Islam is a religion of "peace" but still condones, endorses, and even insists upon the actions of "honor killings" for women who get pregnant out of wedlock?

I call the justice system the injustice system because it is the justice systems place to protect criminals from justice.

Where I live the people judge and sentence you, crime is almost nonexistant for good reason.

If you commit a crime and the police can't get to you fast enough to protect and serve you, you'll know the true justice system is swift and unmerciful.

The community caught a rapist a few years ago and hung him, while he was being hung they stuck lit matches up his nose and told him to smell hell. They are in the process of tracking down a thief at the present time, wonder what fate awaits them.

Do you think the world would be a better place if everyone answered to the people for thier crimes?

I'm NOT an American and would like to know if the following is considered rude behavior in the US. It's actually TWO cases below.

1) I called a suit-selling store where I had previously ordered a nice suit and said "Hi, I'm calling to ask if my suit is ready.....",. The guy that answered the phone interrupted me and said "What suit, my friend??? I have about 1000 suits here!, what's your name?". Now, at the moment he interrupted me with such question, I was about to tell him my name. I thought it was kind of rude of him not waiting for me to tell him my name and making it look as if I was stupid enough to call and ask for my suit without giving them my name to identify it. Of course I was going to tell him my name but he didn't let me finish. Would his behavior be considered rude in the US or is it acceptable?

This is kinda strange to me how people are so quick to shun away from this concept. Wouldnt you think God still cares about the people this day as he did of old and want to reveal the truth unto us?

Especially a religion that makes people scared about something that might happen to them after death…

2007-10-06 21:43:04 · 13 answers · asked by Anonymous in Religion & Spirituality

We as people have such a fear of death, not one of us really KNOWS if there's an afterlife or not and some people spend their life trying to figure out if there really is an afterlife or not...

but we have absolutely no problem showing death in movies or books?

I know when people watch movies, they can watch it disconnected from everything that's going on, they'll feel emotion if it's a sad movie, and scared if it's a horror movie, and overall, it's just a movie right?

How can we feel that way, when we know nothing of death ourselves?

All animals fear death, every species wants to live. I don't care how good a life you've lived, if you were given a chance to live while you were on your deathbed, you'd take it. So no one really wants to die.

How could we possibly portray something that frightening, something that no one wants to experience, something that we have no real knowledge of, like we do in movies/ books?

if you are an objective and moral thinker, you know that it is wrong to declare that a politician is unfit for public servitude just because he does not believe in christianity.

but the majority of this christian poplulace would almost never elect someone who doesn't believe in god.
obviously everyone is entitled to vote however they wish, but the truth is that most christians do not have neither the desire or cognitive ability to be objective in respect to the viewpoints of people who feel they have justified reasons for not believing in god.

I just read how last week some congressman became the first to ever declare himself an unbeliever.

maybe, if your a christian, you might declare it a victory for god that "secular humanism" is so anathemic to the majority of registered voters, but isn't it disingenuous that this "victory" is held secure by the inablility of the average man to empathize with the rationalized contentions of an unbeliever?

I believe that everyone has "down days" no matter how devout they are to their religion.

How do you know when you are in a spiritual rut and how do you bring yourself out of it?

This question is open to atheists as well... I want lots of perspective here.

Whatever religion you are, or lack of religion for that matter, whatever you believe happens when you die is what happens. For example, if Christians believe they followed Jesus and and are going to be in heaven with Him that is what they get. Or is someone believes they have been bad and thinks they will go to hell, is that where they go. Is it possible to create your own afterlife with simply believing in it?
Cuz I believe my afterlife is going to be a rave party, could it work?
Since we are all energy will our consciousness go "somewhere" or will we just not exist anymore?
(I was kind of kidding about my heaven being a rave, I'm seriously curious about others opinions in this)

My grandmother is dying so i have been in contact with my dad recently. When i express to him how sad i am about my Meme dying, he just says something about how it is god's will and that she will end up in heaven so i shouldn't be worried about her. I don't want to cause a rift in our relationship so i just say, "yeah, you are right. god takes care of everything." I feel bad everytime i do this because i am an athiest and i secretly believe my dad is weak for believing in god. But i don't want to insult him either or make him not like me so i just go along with his religious propaganda. Is this hypocritical? Should i mention to my dad that i don't believe in god at such an awful time when my Meme is dying or should i just let it go and let him believe in his fantasies?

They included Bush as being an Endtimer.. seems lots of these Christians don't care what happens on earth as they are all convinced the "rapture" is here (almost here?)
Is this not a little scary? Or strange.. your thoughts please.
