Each person's experience will differ according to thier personal belief system. Here is a decent paper on the subject of Astral Projection (or Astral Travel) and the associated Astral Plane:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astral_travel
Of course, this deals with the paranormal, and as such it is controversial. Skeptics say that there is only the evidence of personal testimonials that anything actually leaves the body. Each person has to make up their own mind on what this all means. For those of us who have experienced it, it is quite real, and needs no further 'proof'. For those who have not experienced it, and have not the open mindedness to accept the possibility of it, it is, of course, nothing but smoke and mirrors.
There are three basic models of this experience and its related phenomenon:
The Separation model: ...astral projection is an 'out of body' experience wherein the astral, or etheric, body carries the consciousness outside the physical body.
The Phasing model: ...wherein no 'movement' actually occurs during astral projection; and the astral planes and the physical world are points on the spectrum of consciousness... this theory says that you 'phase' into another area of consciousness, sychronising with another 'reality'... this is much like the sci fi 'multiple universe' theory, with the human ability to shift between the worlds..
The Skeptical model: ...the scientific minded consider astral projection to be an experience which takes place in the mind/brain of the person who experiences it... somewhat similar to an 'out-of-body-experience', but without any experience of astral planes, and can be induced artificially with drugs or other direct brain stimulation.

The astral plane is basically the physical but different at the same time. In the astral plane, u can do anything because ur subconcious controls ur enviroment. U can fly, move through objects, etc. But be warned, just like the physical plane, there are dangerous beings. Dont mess with something ur instincts tell u not to.

The astral plane is more real than real. You are also free. Your spirit can reflect any aspect of itself to a physical manifested experience. These experiences are very lucid.

everyones view will be different but in every case the astral plane will be bright, calm and full of love. if you learn to meditate and while meditating ask if you canbe shown the spirit world and eventually you will see it like a video rerun in your mind.
