if you are an objective and moral thinker, you know that it is wrong to declare that a politician is unfit for public servitude just because he does not believe in christianity.
but the majority of this christian poplulace would almost never elect someone who doesn't believe in god.
obviously everyone is entitled to vote however they wish, but the truth is that most christians do not have neither the desire or cognitive ability to be objective in respect to the viewpoints of people who feel they have justified reasons for not believing in god.
I just read how last week some congressman became the first to ever declare himself an unbeliever.
maybe, if your a christian, you might declare it a victory for god that "secular humanism" is so anathemic to the majority of registered voters, but isn't it disingenuous that this "victory" is held secure by the inablility of the average man to empathize with the rationalized contentions of an unbeliever?

I think you've managed to make your point in the course of asking your question. I agree with you, and I don't know that there's much I can add to it. How about I just star your question?

How exactly can someone be moral yet not believe in God? Morality is adherence to a system of right and wrong and the consequences for doing what is wrong are clearly laid out by the system.
If there is no God, then there is no morality. How can anything be right and anything be wrong if there is no purpose for us being here? It means we just make up what is right in our own mind, and what is right to one will not be right to another. If we were just made by random evolutionary chance, then anything goes and to the victor go the spoils in every aspect of life. It means that only the strong will survive...(which is obviously untrue by the way) It means that only the rich and prosperous could truly enjoy their lives (also untrue). That only those with might and power and good genetics would find the best mates (also untrue). It means that there is no inherent right or wrong because we would then be merely a mutation of genetic material and just happened to become human over thousands of milennia...and as such an accidental occurrence, a mistake, a happenstance with no designed purpose or intent, then there is no reason to be moral other than to avoid conflict, or to gain advantage with another person...not simply because what is done happens to be right for it's own sake. It means that nothing would be done without an ulterior motive, and all for personal gain. Morality would be a weakness if the world was based upon human ambition and desire for wealth and prosperity. If we are an accidental happenstance of evolution, then any advantage we can use to benefit ourselves while we live our very short and temporary, and utterly meaningless lives is not only logical, but mandatory in order to beat the other guy who will do the exact same thing in order to survive in spite of you.
Morality would not mean anything if God didn't exist.
Since God does exist, it means that people think of the other person before themselves....people are to love their neighbor, even if that neighbor hates them. It means that when someone cuts you off in the car...you are not to become so angry with them that you want to harm them. It means that thoughtfulness and compassion are more important than aggressive ambition and vengeance. It means that giving is more important than receiving. It means that we are never alone and we cannot get away with our crimes just because no human being is around to see it. It means that we are held accountable for our own actions one day...when we leave this earth.

Yes, it is unfair...
Just because I believe in a God does not mean that I agree with all the fanatics that make life so hard on people...
I get along great with atheists and agree with them on many points... I just still think there's a finger for every light switch that's been turned on if you know what I mean...
What really amazes me though, is how comfortable people can be with making their broad religious generalizations in public forums... like the way Bush doesn't see any problems mixing his politicking with his preaching... that gets on my nerves as an American!

Although I believe in God I have to say I agree with you. To many people will not look at who a person is simply because of their religion, or for that mater political affiliation, race, or sex.
I would have no trouble electing a moral atheist to a public position because I am a strict....Strict.....STRICT believer in the separation of Church and state.

I think that a belief in God is vital for the leaders of our country. I also think that anyone labeled as an evangelical is classified as a neo con or fundamentalist and somehow that's bad.

People, including atheists, want to vote for people whose beliefs are in line with their own.
Are you telling me you wouldnt be more inclined to vote for an atheist than a christian?
I will vote almost completely on political similarities, but if a couple of people have similar political beliefs and one is an atheist and the other is a christian I will probably vote for the christian because I know that their value and belief system are similar to mine.

I don't think an atheist shares my morals or looks out for my best interests. Why should I support one?

I agree completely. This democracy seems more like a theocracy everyday. I mean, an evangelical was elected president... TWICE!!
The Christian right seems to run our government.
