Descarte - in his work 'the meditations', used deductive thinking to examine reality. He pealed back the layers of what we can truly know for curtain. He came up with a statement - 'I think therefore I am' as being the only statement we can know for truth. but because he was in a Christian country, he had to include god. so he invented a structure to place on it so that god had something to do. that is the 'ghost in the machine'.
