Newborn & Baby - August 2007

I have cared for children since I have been about 12 years old when my first neice was born. So I've been really great with diciplining older children but I am so confused with my 6 month old! When I sit him down for floor time he gets so angry! He will sit on the floor and I will lay next to him and encourage him so he's not alone but he just does not enjoy this at all. I feel like he is spoiled already. I started trying this...after about five minutes of him loosing his temper I lay him in his crib and let him cry for about ten minutes and then get him back to play again if he has not cried himself to sleep...am I doing the right thing? Is he spoiled by me and my family? I don't want to get into bad habits as he is young, cuz I know how bad it can get as I worked in day care for years!

I had my daughter by C-section 6 weeks ago. At first I was fine with not loosing any weight because I was recovering from the surgery and was not able to move around to great also I was not too carefull about my eating because people were bring us tons of food and I figured I would start a healthy eating plan when I was healed and able to prepare food for myself again. Anyways its now 6 weeks after I had my daughter and I find I'm absolutly starving all the time, It doesn't seem to matter what I do I'm always hungry. I am breast feeding but I know you only need 300-500 extra calories a day. I'm not too sure what to do as I'm eating more and having more cravings than when I was pregnant. Did anyone else experiance this? I've actually gained 5 lbs since my daughter was delivered!

Generally when you go to shop for nappies for your baby you will notice that you need to pick up the one according to the weight of your baby irrespective of how old he/she is. Why is that so?

Our beautiful healthy now 3 1/5 month old son has been stretching out his legs wanting to stand up since he was born and has been standing up while held since just about 2-3 weeks old. We have not been encouraging it but it's like he just started doing it and likes it. if you hold him sitting down he just wants to stand up and if you lay him down he can get very grumpy and then you hold him standing and he's happy again. He's always been a very alert and curious baby and he loves to look around and be a part of what's going on. He never slept much during the day even as a newborn but always slept all night 95 % of the time. He's now working on lifting his head while laying on his tummy and is making progress but does not like it.

So anyone else out there with a baby who's been standing up very early while beeing held?

My baby sleeps most of the day and she sleeps great. Only waking up every few hours to eat. I try to keep her awake in the daytime more but it is impossible to keep her awake. When she is ready to sleep, she is out. No matter if she is in the upright position or if she is laying down or what ever.

At night around 12:30 she wakes up and that seems to be one of her most active times. I feed her but she is usually wide awake and will not go back to sleep until 3:00-4:00 am. Even then she is back up at 6:00am. It is terrible for my husband and I because we are so tired.

My baby goes back to sleep at around 8:00-9:00am and that is when she begins her daily sleeping.

She just can not seem to get her days and nights fixed....I try sleeping in the day while she is napping but in all reality that is not always possible. I have 3 other children to take care of as well. I never had this type of problem with the other children. They woke up in the middle of the night but not like this. HELP!

My son will be 9 months in a week. He is still breast fed. But he only nursed for maybe 5 mins or less on each side. He is getting solids throughout the day. I want to make sure he is getting enough milk. I don't know how much he gets when he nurses, but usually when I pump in place of a feeding I only get out 4 oz or less; except for morning. I always have more in the morning. I am wondering if maybe he doesn't even like breast milk anymore? I haven't tried dairy products yet because he was breaking out with eczema when he got milk based formula. Dr. put him on soy. He usually nurses at 8, 12, 4:30 and 8:15. He eats solids an hour after he nurses except for the 8:15pm...then he goes to bed.

I have been breastfeeding my son, (or more or less pumping and feeding because he wont latch on) for over 5 months now. He's almost 5 1/2 mos old.
I recently had an ear infection, which i had to take antibiotics for. The doctor said the antibiotics were safe for breastfeeding. For the last 5 days or so, i've noticed the amount of milk has gone down. ( I was able to get about 6-7 ounces every time now i only get about 3-4 ounces)
Is the decrease because of the antibiotics? The frequency of pumping hasnt gone down, since it's supply and demand.
I've been take'n fenugreek to help get the supply back up, and "power pumping"
Any suggestions ? Thanks!

I am Breast feeding and I am letting down on both sides. I would like to be able to breastfeed in public. I cannot do it because the breast that the baby is not latched on to will leak and soak a bath towel. Is there anything that I can do about this? (baby is 4days old and my milk came in 2days ago)

My sister just gave birth to her first baby (daughter) on Saturday night via a cesarean section. She was told by the doctors almost 12 hours later that the baby sustained a fracture in her leg and she was rushed to the childrens hosp immediately where they are doing additional testing for any signs of brittle bone disease. Needless to say my sister's a wreck and no one is giving us a straight answer as to how this happened. I somewhat understand if she gave birth naturally but a c-section? Has this ever happened to anyone else??

Why do you get mad when breastfeeding mothers talk about the benefits of breast milk and how it's better then formula? Why is that so offensive for formula feeding mothers to hear? It's true, proven with countless studies, that breast milk is far superior to formula.

Why attack breastfeeding mothers when they merely state the facts? So many women seem so touchy about the subject and quickly try to dismiss how important breastfeeding is to the health of babies. Why not give kudos to the women who made the commitment to breastfeed their children despite it not always being the easiest choice?!

If you couldn't breastfeed your child then there is no reason to be defensive. I think it's the women who could and didn't who feel guilty, or something, and attack. Which is their issue. No one is calling you a bad mother. At least I'M not. So why whenever a question comes up about formula/breastfeeding do SOME formula feeding mothers get so defensive?

My daughter has been on Zantac since she was 10 weeks old. She's now almost 8 months old, and I'm trying to get her off the medication. Until about a week ago she would get the medication twice a day. I've started only giving it to her once a day, and yesterday stopped it all together. But a few days ago she started being really grumpy... and today's really a bad day. Normally she's in a very good mood.
The probem is I can't really tell if it's reflux or teething...
For other people with babies with this problem, how long was it until they did not need any medication? (Around 6 mos, we tried giving up the Zantac, but it got really bad, so we went back, at our doctor's advice).
Thanks a lot!

My daughter is six weeks old this week. I am very confused about being told to supplement with formula. On the one hand, I understand supplementing doesn't help my milk supply, but on the other hand, I just pumped three ounces in a single sitting. So my milk supply can't be low. But this amount NEVER satisfies my daughter. She never gets full. For the past three plus weeks now, she's had nursing marathons, nursing for an hour and a half of active sucking, yet she still fusses and wants more to eat and doesn't sleep. Give her 2 ounces of formula and she's resting peacefully! Can someone explain this? The school of thought that says I must only breastfeed at all times is losing here, because my fussy daughter is finally peaceful after 2 ounces of formula, despite weeks of breast milk that never seems to fill her up.

I had my baby last week and all he does is sleep. And I'm talking at least 15-19 hours a day. Does anyone else's baby do/done this? He was born at 37.5 weeks so perhaps its because he was a little premature. I could use the help from any mother out there who's baby has slept like this or still does. When did your child start to stay awake more? Thanks so much!

I'm a first time mommy, and we don't want to end up with a house full of stuff that we don't really use. (Like a wipe warmer...!) We are especially interested in stroller and car seat recommendations. And we also want to know what kinds of things people bought or got as gifts that they couldn't live without, or never used!
