Heat up a pot of water on the stove and let the milk sit in the hot water until it reaches the ideal temperature.
Absolutely DO NOT put it in the microwave as suggested by previous poster. That robs the milk of nutrients, and therefore it robs the baby of nutrients. "No microwaves" is the #1 rule when it comes to reheating breast milk.

Many people put the frozen milk in a pot of hot water until it thaws but my doctor advised that the milk be taken out of the freezer and left to thaw at room temperature and THEN placed in a cup of hot water for a few minutes (2-3) for it to get a little warm (somewhat bodylike temperature). The reason for this is that when you thaw the milk out in hot/boiling water it robs the milk of its essential nutrients whereas if the milk is thawed and then placed in a cup of hot water it does not kill the nutrients as it is not at boiling temperature.

To defrost breast milk you need to put it into the fridge about 6 hours before you need to use it.
This is the recommend best way to keep the nutrients alive.
For instance. If you have a few stored in the freezer then take what you need for the next day out and put it in the fridge and it will be ready for the next day
Hope this helps :)

It probably means not to just sit it out on the counter overnight. I always froze mine in the little bags that you put straight into the bottle. I would thaw them in the fridge. Just pop a few into the fridge and they would thaw in about 8-10 hours. That way, they never got even remotely warm before ready to use. Good luck.

I used to put the bag/bottle in a mug of water that I had heated in the microwave. The milk doesn't go in the microwave, just the water that I needed to heat up. I would just change the water when it got too cold and periodically shake the bag/bottle to speed things up. That would take about 5 minutes. If I had more time, I'd just leave it in the fridge overnight.

Ann W was not suggesting putting the milk in the microwave. She specifically stated that she heats the WATER in the microwave, then puts the bag of milk in the WATER - which is what I do. It's safer than putting it in a pot of water on the stove.

To heat it, put it in the microwave. Don't worry about the nutrient b.s. the other posters talk about. I was born in '82... about the same time microwaves started to become popular. My parents bought one so they could heat bottles. I turned out fine. They still have that microwave! I'll probably even end up heating my kid's bottles (if I have kids) in that exact same microwave when we go to visit Gramma and Grampa.
