My daughter has been on Zantac since she was 10 weeks old. She's now almost 8 months old, and I'm trying to get her off the medication. Until about a week ago she would get the medication twice a day. I've started only giving it to her once a day, and yesterday stopped it all together. But a few days ago she started being really grumpy... and today's really a bad day. Normally she's in a very good mood.
The probem is I can't really tell if it's reflux or teething...
For other people with babies with this problem, how long was it until they did not need any medication? (Around 6 mos, we tried giving up the Zantac, but it got really bad, so we went back, at our doctor's advice).
Thanks a lot!

Helllo. sorry you have went through the reflux rollercoaster too... My son was a severe reflux baby who was on prevacid and axid, and also a hypoallerginic formula. Honestly with some babies it takes up to 2-3 years before they are med free. With mine we got off the meds at 20 months.

A good way to determine if it is reflux or teething. Did the Zantac make her stop being grumpy? If not then I would check on the teething. Two pieces of advice.

- If reflux continues to be an issue, ask the doc to prescribe Axid as it is an even quicker solution and for more occasional use. This will help wean from the Zantac.

- At 8 months one thing that works well (though a bit wierd) is a CLEAN baby wash cloth. Get it moist though not soggy. Put it in the freezer. When frozen, offer it to the little one as a toy. I have found that they bite it and then sort of rip on it. this really calms them down quickly.

Best of luck- I think we all feel your pain!

My daughter has reflux, which was very bad up until recently. She is 9.5 months old. I tried stopping her Zantac once, and it was hell. Zantac isnt there to make it gi away, it;s to ease the pain. Savannahs reflux was so bad, she had to sleep i nher car seat because she would choke on her sit up. Your best bet is to keep giving her Zantac and reduce the amount once her refluxing has slowed down.

My son has reflux really bad & has been on meds since he was 5-6 weeks old....
I tried weaning him off of it , to see how he did, and the 2nd day that he didnt get any medicine, he was sooo grumpy, & cried almost all day.... the next day, he was the same, so I gave him his meds & within 30 minutes he was smiling & happy again!

I work with premature babies and everyone of them has reflux. Most clear up by 12 months, but for some it can go on until 18 months.

My brother had acid reflux when he was born and still does to this day and he is 18. She may always need something to help.
