I had my baby last week and all he does is sleep. And I'm talking at least 15-19 hours a day. Does anyone else's baby do/done this? He was born at 37.5 weeks so perhaps its because he was a little premature. I could use the help from any mother out there who's baby has slept like this or still does. When did your child start to stay awake more? Thanks so much!

Most babies sleep 16 - 20 hours a day. My daughter slept for almost 20. We had to wake her to eat and change her diaper. It's normal.

I can't help with the second part simply because my "baby" is now six years old and I don't remember when he started sleeping less, but he did sleep a LOT when he was first born. 15 to 18 hours per day is "normal" for a newborn...usually drops to 15 hours by 3 months. My son was also a tad premature (35 wks)...he slept about 20 hours (average) for at least the first month. Doctor said it was quite normal!

That is totally normal. He could even sleep more. My son slept this much until he was around 4 months old, but then I adjusted his eating schedule and he was up more. As long as your baby is eating enough at this point, about all your baby should be doing is eating and sleeping and having some awake periods with increasing activity. Your baby is doing fine! Congratulations!

That sounds about right to me. I had my baby on the 1st of August, and he is just now starting to stay awake for 45 minutes or more. But after he's awake for so long, he'll sleep for about 4 hours straight. You should enjoy this time while you have it to catch up on sleep and get some stuff done around the house. Because once he's up for longer, you'll have your hands full. Good luck.

That is totally normal for any newborn baby, from 0-3 months they sleep alot at least 20hrs sleep in 24hrs but all babies are different so don't compare to anyone elses. Our daughter is 8 weeks and is starting to stay awake more sometimes she sleeps 3.5hrs in the day and other days she may sleep alot more. Just let him sleep when he wants to, they need to get over the birth and their new surroundings which is alot to take in for them, when they sleep they process whatever has happened to them while they were awake and to grow they need sleep. Just enjoy it at the moment and sleep when he does.

Newborn babies sleep for around 20 hours out of 24 per day so this is totally normal.

That's normal for many babies -as long as he is waking to eat it is fine. If he isn't waking to eat he must be woken up (for breastfed babies this is every 2 hours during the day and ever 4 hours at night, I have no clue about formula).

Otherwise just let him sleep. Probably around 6 weeks you will see a change. It is hard to predict though.

Totally normal. I can remember trying to wake my baby for feedings (I nursed) because I would be full and it was time. But, in the beginning - they are going through so much and they are very tired. They grow so much. That is why people say all they do is sleep, eat and poop :)

Newborns sleep...it's not like they can go out and get a job or something...so, they sleep. OK?

Seriously through...while babies sleep, their bodies are manufacturing growth hormones; that's why they grow at such an alarming rate!
