Because babies grow at different rates. Some babies are quite big, and some are small for their ages. It is easier to get the appropriate fit when it is done by weight. For example both myself and my sister in law have baby boys. Hers is only 2 weeks older than mine. My baby is upwards of 25 pounds, while hers is only 16 pounds. So, even thought they are close in age, they do not wear the same size diaper.

Just the parents being lazy wouldn't mind but it must cost them a bomb in nappies i've got 6 lads all bin potty train before they were 2 apart from baby Zack but he's only 4 1/2 months old .How horrible it must be for that child to go school in a nappy.

Umm, because not every 2yr. old, for example, is the same size. So it makes more sense to have them by weight. My daughter is small for her age, so she's obviously not gonna take the same size diaper as other kids her age. Anyway, you generally ignore the weight label and just buy what fits anyway, as long as you are staying with the same brand.

Babies grow at different stages, No one baby is the same. You must have noticed that some babies are born at 6 lbs and some at 8lbs. And some gain weight much faster than others?

So you get the right size around the legs and the waist. Not all babies are the same size at the same age.

Because some babies weigh 5 pounds the day they are born, and some babies weigh 10 pounds! It just wouldn't work by age, you see.

The same reason you buy YOUR clothes by size, and not by how old you are. Every baby is not the same size.
