My son did that. He was able to hold his head up from day 0, which I think helped him build strength in his abdomen, legs, and back. He still isn't walking though. He's almost there - he can climb the stairs and cruise furniture, but I think his feet are too tiny. He'll be 1 year on 9/3.
UPDATE: The following answerer said "once they learn to crawl they stop doing that," but that can't be universally true for all babies, because my son has never stopped standing since the first time he did it. In fact, he began standing while holding on to furniture shortly before he learned to crawl, and continued to do so ever since.

Hi there!
I have a 4 and a half Month old Daughter and she is the same she always wants to stand up she has been like that from about a month old..
I dont hold her back i go with what she wants to do she doesnt like to sit she likes to stand with support its not like i let her have all her weight on her little legs.
But i think its good it will encourage them to do it and i think it might help the child walk at an earlier stage!
My daughter to also is trying to sit up, When you lay her down she wants to get up!
I think its quiet normal and i also think that this is great my friends Child is a month older than my daughter and he is not doing this as yet...
My daughter Rolls over now and has started to sit when i sit her up but sits alone i think this is because i let her do things when she was ready i did not push her!
Your doing a great job and if your son is ready he will let you know!!

Many babies like to be upright aand love to stand. It's fun and it's exercise for them. A friends baby used to bounce up and down when he was just a few months old. He would push in to a stand then squat, up nd down all the time with a big smile. It's natural for them to want to straighten out their legs and "stand" don't worry about it. The babies neck is getting stronger and will be holding up the head and then rolling over then sitting and all that good stuff really soon. Stop fretting about things and watch in amazement because before you know it that baby will be going off to collage.

My son started doing this at about 2 months old (he was 2 months early, so this would have been around his due date). He is 13 months old now & pulls up & walks around now while holding on to everything, but he still does not walk on his. I think it is pretty normal for babies to stand up that early though.

Yes. My granddaughter likes to stand. She is now 6 weeks old and has been standing, with help of course, for 2 - 3 weeks. Don't let anyone tell you your baby will have bowed legs - lol. This is an old wives' tale. I remember my mother-in-law telling me this 20 years ago when my daughter stood up when she was an infant.

mine, since he was 1 month or younger... babies like if they can see around from a higher position... my boy lifted his head since he was 3 weeks (coz he sleeps on his tummy)
my boy prefer to lay on his back even though he sleeps on his tummy... cos with laying on his back, he can look around
but once he can do commando crawling, if i put him on his tummy, he will be happily crwaling :p
babies tend to stand up, even make a step when we hold it (even a newborn), and they are happy looking around.. that's a good sign that ur baby has a good sight
my boy doesnt like sleeping during the day either.. wakes up at 6 am... sleeps at 8 pm... 1 hour in total of naps in between

hi, what a sweetie! my sisters son started walking from 7months which was very weird cos he was still tiny and walking around! he grew very tall, finished uni and very clever so you may have an expert on your hands!! My own daughter started lifting her head the day after she was born and still in hospital- the nurses were amazed and said all babies have very weak neck muscles when first born. she use to lay on her back or tummy and strain to lift her neck and look around. so good for him, though be careful because his leg bones are still fairly soft and need supporting, and they could start bowing if too much weight from his body is put on them. Bye and happy families X

My son does the same exact same thing...
Fusses on tummy
Awake most of the day and alert
Sleeps 6-7 hrs at night
Stand up while I'm supporting his middle-he has been able to hold his neck by himself 99% of the time for a couple weeks now

My daughter did the same thing. She is now 71/2 months and just loves her rainforest jumperoo. She will also stand on mommy or daddy's legs and jump like crazy.
My mother-in-law was amazed at how Haleigh wanted to stand when she was 5 weeks old.
Maybe it's time to get him an exersaucer and have at it!
