Newborn & Baby - March 2007

OK so here is the situation- I had planned to return to work after the birth of my first child and went out on maternity leave 2 weeks prior to his birth. But once he was born I couldn't bear the thought of leaving him and decided to stay home and quit my job.... until my boss called me today and offered me a very big promotion (he doesn't know yet that I am not planning to return) with a sizable raise. We could make it financially if I stayed home but would be on a super tight budget and would have to cut back A LOT (one car instead of two, super strict meal planning, no vacations, no extra stuff for the baby, etc)... the extra income would be a huge help and we would be able to maintain the lifestyle we are used to.... Please give me your thoughts....

She will eat the first portion of her bottle (Usually 3 oz) and then wait to exactly the hour mark to eat the rest (usually 1-1.5 oz). Should I not give her the extra portion and let her learn she can't do that? Do i have to make her feedings every 3 hours (Vs. 4) to get her hungry for the next feeding instead of giving her the bottle back at the hour mark? HELP! I dont' want to be feeding her all day long but i don't want her to be hungry either. I dont think a pacifier will hold her over the 4 hours if she is only eating 3 oz...

I have been breastfeeding my six week old son and recently the health visitor advised to let him empty the right breast, wind him, then offer him the left one. But how do I know when my breast is empty? and also how can i tell if my son is actually drinking and not just suckling on my nipple? (which im convinced the cheeky little boy is doing)

I nursed my sister's son when he was just days old. They were having a hard time getting started. I gave her my 2 month old who knew exactly what to do. I took her 2 day old and taught him. It worked like a charm she nursed him til he was 1 yr old.
she was on the brink of giving up and bottle feeding him. Her husband was at the store buying forumla.

I had some frozen breast milk from early January. When I took it out baby wouldn't take it (that's another question) so I tasted it and it tasted the way spit up smells - NASTY - why would it be bad after being frozen for only 2 months? I could also use advice on giving baby the bottle - anyone try the breast bottle?

Could someone tell me what the most common disposable diaper size is for children between the age of 1 and 2? I'm purchasing for a friend who is adopting a 1-year old and I have no idea what size to buy. Also - if there's a common preference in brand (Huggies, Pampers, Luvs, etc.) that would also be helpful to know. Thanks!

He eats really good. He has a 4oz bottle when he wakes up then cereal with fruit then another 4 oz bottle before he takes a nap. When he wakes up he gets another bottle then lunch which he gets veggies some kind of meat and a fruit. He has another 4 oz bottle then has pretty much the same thing he had for lunch for dinner (different types though). Then has a 8 oz bottle before he goes to bed. Is there something that we can do differently? he only weighs 17 lbs 13 oz. Please help, thanks

I can not stand when so many women dog others for not breast feeding!! It is our choice!!! It makes me so mad!!! I delivered 5 weeks early on the dot and she was in the NICU and fed through a tube formula because NONE of my milk had come in ( none at all not event the pre milk ) and they needed to feed her so they did that for a day then put her on bottle to feed after that. ( took me 4 days to get milk in... any milk ) so when I tried she hated it and would not take ( tried for a day then 5 on and off after that) so I get so mad at moms who say formaul sucks because some have to have it because moms like me can not do it any other way... what are your Veiws on it???

I'm compiling this information to see what parents prefer to use so that if I get an even amount for both I will offer both for our customers to choose from. Do you have a brand that you prefer to use?

My husband has a large extended family and they all want to come over to hold our 2-week old baby. The pediatrician has instructed us not to bring him in public for 3 months due to cold and flu germs. Of course, we have welcomed our parents and siblings to hold the baby (as long as they are not sick and they wash their hands), but we want to keep the rest of the relatives off for a while. Why take the risk with our child's health? Of course, we are being pressured tremendously by relatives who just want to meet the precious baby, and we don't blame them for that. What is a reasonable amount of time to wait to invite them over?

I have tried using both the Playtex soft spout and the Nuby soft spout ones, but my 12 month old just chews on the spouts and doesn't know how to get that suction going to suck down the liquid. Is there a cup you can recommend that is easy for a beginner to use - even one that is not "No Spill" and some liquid pours out a little at a time to give her the right idea?

my son lately wont sleep at night at all. he stays up as late as 1 in the morning. we tried to just let him cry himself to sleep but he gets histerical adn it sounds like he is really in pain or somthing. but once we bring him back down stairs he is FINE!! he sleeps very well during the day. i thought maybe he just didnt like his crib but i know that isnt true now because i just went and layed him down in his crib, there is daylight in there. he is sleeping just fine. could he be scared of the dark adn doesnt want to be alone in it? and what can i do since its impossible for me to sleep with lights on?

Does anyone know where I can get come type of help for cranial banding? My five month old little girl has a mishaped head and to help fix this the Physical Therapist has recommened Cranial banding. The problem here is that this procedure costs $2,000.00 which I don't have. The mishaped head is due to her troticollis that I am currently fixing. I have applied for State Medicaid,Florida Healthy Kids & KidCare and all of them have denied me for too much income. My husband does not make that much money and the people looking at his check stubs are saying no beacause they are looking at the net instead of the gross income. This condition is a birth defect & if not treated can lead to other problems like no verbal communication, eyesight being bad in one eye, brain developement issues. I should be able to get some type of help due to a birht defect. All I seem to have are dead ends with no sign of help. If anyone knows where I may find some help please let me know... Hopefully waiting

i started using a pacifier with my 5 day old and it has been the only thing that has soothed his crying (other than nursing for hours on end).
i thought i once heard some people say it can cause his teeth to be crooked but others dont' believe that.
so far breastfeeding is still going fine but will continued pacifier use make him less interested in the breast because its not as easy as the pacifier to suck on?
