With our country supposedly based on a clear separation of church and state, how did the term “Legally Married” ever come to be? How did getting married become a process where you have a commitment ceremony AND have to file paperwork with the courts? I understand that we now have certain legal rights and tax effects based on our marriage status. However, shouldn’t it really be based on our partnership status? If there are 2 consenting adults agreeing to partner up in life together, regardless of sex, shouldn’t every partnership have equal legal rights?

Last night in Chili's the young man sitting in the booth next to us had his phone on ridiculously loud BEEP. Each time he received a text message his phone would BEEP. The BEEP was so loud that it disturbed the conversation at our table. Barring all of the free rights guaranteed by this and that, what, if anything, do you think should be done to guarantee everyone a peaceful existence in a world of cell phones?

I am looking into doing some online training in the area of paralegal studies. I am planning on making a career change and want to go in the paralegal direction.

Can any lawyers or law firms tell me what they look for from a paralegal. Are they looking for an AA, a BA, a paralegal certificate (like the 14 week course Boston University offers), or otherwise?

Also........what do you think about the NALA? Is it beneficial/necessary to take the CLA examination that they offer?

Can you please tell me your sources with web addresses if possible

In response to naive statements made supporting the bastardized freedom of speech right supported by the aclu - the so called statements are "edited" before printed - some call it "paraphrasing"..- the "edge" is taken off of the harsh ACLU truth and made pallatable so that "intellectuals" can take it , run with it to justify the ACLU position any way they want...the ACLU represents the "other" side is just to throw a "moral bone" to those who really understand what they are up to. The aclu wants for us to beleive that they support morality and the the common man and the prejudice practised against the common man - because the "Almightly Intellectuals in ACLU" who have created their own definition of "intellectual" considers their truth the only truth.."so help them intellectual"

My husband and I am thinking to put our flat under a trust. Who should we contact? If the flat under a trust, can we sell it later? Can we live there if we want to? The flat has a mortgage and we plan to rent it out since we are moving to abroad.

Is it fair that for an insurace claim, certain people's lives are worth more than others? For example, a police officer's life may be worth more money to his family than a researcher's does to his. I'm talking more general but this, but who's to say that the researcher wouldn't have cured cancer, or that the policeman would have gone nuts and took out his family. Or the other way around...

i'm currently 9 months pregnant, and i live with my hubby and 4yr old son, we recently moved into an apartment that needed some fixing up-but the landlord said he would fix the things that needed to be fixed- he collected our rent and disappeared! nvr fixed anything and now his wife came from peru and is trying to charge us more rent and doesn't validate her husband's promises to fix anything in our apartment- now since my husband has paid the rent before and nothing got fixed he's holding on to the rent and won't pay it for all the obvious reasons... she actually took us to court to have us evicted- but the judge didn't hear our side of the story and just told us to pay the rent without even hearing our side of why we haven't paid the rent- especially since she was not the person we did business with in the first place! can anyone give us some legal advice as how to take her to court for negligence of landlord duties. thanks for ur time in reading this, please help.

I am involved in retail middle management, and an employee presented this scenario.

The upper management had apparently been "mis- adding" the hours punched in on the employee time cards on a regualr basis.
Sometimes by as much as a few hours per employee!

Hence, the employees were quite often not paid for their actual hours worked.

Also, the HR director instituted a policy of not paying the employees for unused breaks. In fact, he always charged them for a half- hour break even though taking one wasn't always feasible.

Now, in my current title as shift leader, I am not in a position to override these decisions and policies. I have been affected by this maltreatment as well.

Whether it is common or not, is this sort of thing legal?

Also, what are our legal options and what ramifications may they hold in store for us down the road?

We live and work in NJ and are unsure if calling the D.O.L. is the right decision right now.

Just wondering because a friend of mine has a job and he thinks he's being screwed because they just notified them tuesday and they get new shifts this friday? I'm not to sure myself but it does seem shady because they're forced new schedules almost every 2 monthes or whenever the managers decide to just change it up. We're in NY state. Not a government job or anything. Any references to sites with these regulations or anything would be much appreciated. Thankyou all.

What happened was, this guy pretends to be a cop. He calls up the fast food restaurants and tells them that one of their young employees is under suspetion of drugs. No names, mind you. He then gets the manager and an outsider (in this case, the manager's fiance) to strip the girl and then one of them stays in the room and is told to have sex with her. THere are over 70 reported cases in America!

Now, I gotta ask, at what point would you say no, this is wrong? When the order is said over the phone with no evidence that it's a cop on the other end? When the manager is told to strip the girl and leave her alone with a male? When the male is told to have sex with a teen for four hours!

And they got off light. Five years for the manager and fiance and so far nothing for the fake cop!

I'm a working mum of 2yr old daughter+6yr old step-daughter. Me+my partner have fully supported my step-daughter forever.
Fair do's, I really don't get on with his ex.This is mainly because I don't agree with her lifestyle(claims to be a single parent-she's not, never worked, benefit fraud,etc.. basic social scum).
As she has had another baby with(yet another) partner, she was cont by CSA. And we must now start paying money to the government(this money is to cover the income support she receives each month).
My grievance is NOT with paying the money. BUT with the fact that if she worked this would not be an issue+we would be able to carry on the way we were doing it before(we supply all her clothes, shoes, school uniform+other stuff). We now are paying money, so we can't afford to buy these things for her. But neither can her mother as she is getting the same as she was before from her benefits.
Basically, why should we all pay for the mothers simple choice of not working?
