Last night in Chili's the young man sitting in the booth next to us had his phone on ridiculously loud BEEP. Each time he received a text message his phone would BEEP. The BEEP was so loud that it disturbed the conversation at our table. Barring all of the free rights guaranteed by this and that, what, if anything, do you think should be done to guarantee everyone a peaceful existence in a world of cell phones?

Personally I detest it. However, I find it a necessary evil since my husband and I own our own electrical company that offers 24 hour service. We get a lot of calls on our cell phones at night since we have our land line forwarded to our cells when we are not at the office. However, we always put our phones on silent/vibrate when we are in a public place. That way we don't disturb anyone around us.

Well, public in general is fine, but in places like restaurants and movie theatres, it's just common courtesy to turn off your cell phone. If your cell phone goes off in a place like that, or worse, if you call someone, you look like a jerk/idiot in front of everyone and people hate you. I think that cell phones should be built with a device that makes them go off when they pass through special gates that will be installed in restaurants and movie theaters. There will still be a way to contact people in a dire emergency, by classifying your call as such, but there will be a charge on that type of call, so it really has to be worth it. This will solve everything.

No one has a "right" to use cell phone in public. We, a tobacco state, just outlawed smoking in any public building in our county.
If some people continue to annoy others with cell phone abuse, it will go the same way as tobacco. I mute my cellphone in movies & restaurants - leaving if important call & returning afterwards.

The only thing more annoying than in restaurants is when you are in the good part of movie & the idiot beside you gets a call about "where he is?". We can practice cell phone manners or legislate them.

I hate when this happens. People can be so rude. This society has turned into a "all about me" mentality. If I want to talk on my phone or get massages and it bothers you, tuff live with it. People can be so rude. If your in a restaurant turn the phone off or at least on vibrate. If you must answer than talk quietly or leave the room. I DON"T WANT TO HERE YOUR PERSONAL BUSINESS. I would think you wouldn't want me to hear it either. People please think before you do something rude like this.

You know, I really dont have much of a problem with people using cell phones in public, except for in theaters, even though the theater will say on the screen several times to silence your cell phones, many just cant seem to do it.

Some just are addicted to it, My Son was and he just could not let it go, and as a result ran up a 1600 dollar cell phone bill in one month.

I get irritated at those who just talk on it, just to try to show people that they are important

Cell phone users are, as a collective group, rude and insensitive. They don't care a whit about those around them. And, if they're talking to you, they automatically take a phone call without so much as apologizing for the interruption. Those that talk on their cell phones while they're driving are the worst. And, I can't wait until one of them is behind me, yakking on his phone, and - in a moment of distraction - smashes into my car. Then I'll wish I had a cell phone so I could immediately call my lawyer! -RKO-

I think when you are in public that you could put your phone on viberate but there are some situtations where there may be an emergency that you need to be able to receive a phone call but I guess if you are eating out then the emergency can not be that bad.

We went to dinner one night and had to sit and listen to the lady in the booth behind us trying desperately to sell a house! I don't get to go out much and I find it very rude to have someone else intrude on my evening! I don't mind people talking in public as long as they do it quietly! NOBODY CAN DRIVE PROPERLY AND HOLD THIER CELL PHONE AT THE SAME TIME!!

I think when you go into a restaurant you should turn you cell phone on vibrate. It is a simple thing to do to ensure the people around you have a nice meal without your interrupting them all the time.

The staff at the restaurant should have asked him to mute the phone or turn it off.
