By term, public defenders help out the community in legal advice. Usually those who seek the help of a public defender are people who are financially unstable. But, I heard from a friend who recently had a criminal case, that his public defender charged him $400.00 at the end of trial.
Is this true in Florida? I thought p.d.'s were free of charge?

I teach college courses in state correctional facilities. A student posed this question to me. I know that people with felonies are not allowed to become attorneys in some states, but I don't know if the restriction applies to all states. Thanks.

What's the law, how is it enforced and can it be challenged? Some stores make you sign them, does that make it any different.

There are a lot of people shouting about illegal activity in a lot of different contexts. And regardless of the situation, one side is saying that breaking the law is acceptable, and someone else is saying that people need to stand trial and pay for their crimes.

Let's take a very simple situation, and deal with a valid law that has been in place for 25 years.

1) Person Breaks the Law.
2) Person Publicly Admits Breaking the Law.
3) Person goes to Trial for Breaking the Law.

That's called the rule of law. That's the way this country is supposed to work. If the person claims: "I was justified in doing that", fine. Just like saying "We needed to do that so people didn't die". Fine. That's called an affirmative defense. Either way, the issues are resolved at trial.

But under what circumstances should we not even bother to have the trial? No charges. No Defenses. No trial at all. When do we ignore the rule of law entirely, and just say that we don't care if the law gets broken?

I know for criminal cases cameras/videos as well as reporters are allowed in. How about for a civil lawsuit? Is there anyway to bar the public from the courtroom?

Does the Constitution of the U.S. also protect disabled/mental children under 18? If so, why does Louisiana Office of Youth Development (regional office-Baton Rouge) not know this? Why can't children's mental records be presented in juvenile court? When a juvenile has a court appointed attorney, is it not logical for that attorney to inform the child's parents of the proceedings either through correnspondance via letter or telephone?

I applied for a job as a copy editor with an investment firm. I am highly qualified. I was tested, then interviewed by a comittee of five. After an hour of interviewing, I was told that I was no longer under consideration because I did not meet the requirement (NOT stated in the ad) of owning investments myself. Through no fault of mine, I have not been paid a living wage in seven years. The requirement that I hold investments - to edit copy - seems absurd and of doubtful legality. It discriminates against those trying to make a comeback, and those from the lower middle class who are "afraid" of investments and who need exposure to them in order to understand them.

A federal judge recently ruled that Bush's violates the 1978 FISA law, which is a federal criminal law against wiretapping Americans without a warrant. Bush has already admitted to authorizing this program more than 30 times. If this judge's ruling is upheld on appeal, then George W. Bush will be guilty of committing more than 30 federal felonies. In that case, should he be impeached and prosecuted?

Currently I'm 20 years old, I've already been employed for more then 2years as a loan officer assistant and make $40,000/yr plus bonuses. However, my credit history is only 9 months worth but I have everything paid and no lates, collections, and or anything like that.

When I try to find an apartment by the wilshire district, and even in parts of Hollywood I have managers tell me that my application was denyed due to credit---but get this---I HAVE A SERVICE with freecreditreport.com which tells me the moment someone pulls my credit....these managers never pulled my credit and denied me on this basis. But they knew that I was able to get a co-signer and they told me that they would accept it but first I had to apply first on my own---yet when this report came they told me they had to move on despite telling me that they would be willing to offer me the co-signer option

WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!
