First of all marriage forms the cornerstone of society in ever nation in the world. You have to admit that every country treats it like it is important. It's not just Repbulicans or religious nuts. Why?

There are issues of ownership, property rights, children, and all the repercussions of divorce.

There are high emotional stakes here. People kill people over broken love affairs. As a result there is a need for a stable society structure related to love relationships.

You also have the historical perspective. If its been done for thousands of years its hard to stop.

And last but not least, religion places a great deal of importance upon it.

Because eventually, some idiot would want to marry his cat, decide that it should be acceptable to all, and that he should get special benefits as a "married" individual, complete with tax benefits, insurance benefits, etc. It's sad, but it really is true, that if you don't define things within the confines of a standard, normative behavior, then everything becomes "okay" by default.
