"(McCain) has a brand of courage that is rare in the public arena these days -- a courage forged in part by those years spent as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and in part by more than two decades of fighting for what he believes in on the floor of the U.S. Senate," the newspaper's editorial board wrote.
The Herald -- the hometown newspaper of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, McCain's rival for the Republican nomination -- described the senator as "a man of unwavering conviction and integrity."
The paper said it was breaking with its tradition of endorsing both Republican and Democratic candidates to put its full support behind McCain. It cited the senator's support for the Iraq troop surge, tax cuts and immigration reform as reasons for the endorsement.
"John McCain should be the next president of the United States and the Boston Herald is proud to endorse his candidacy," the Herald said.
