It's all I hear..... the poor, the poor, the poor. I don't give a damn about the poor. Why should I? What does the poor have to do with me? Get a job. The same could be said about immigrants, minorities, blah blah blah. I DO care about the rights of women...... um, because I AM ONE. See how that works?

Most everyone who came to this country was poor. The difference between those poor and the ones we have now is that those poor were able through their own efforts to stop being as poor.
It used to be that if a man was willing and able to work, he did, and then he wasn't poor anymore. If he wasn't willing, perhaps the town he lived in would support him for awhile, but soon he would be expected to do for himself. If he wasn't able, the town would help him to survive. This isn't the case anymore. Now even if you work, you might not be able to support yourself.
The government, through well meaning laws, has stuck it's nose into every aspect of our lives, so that if you want to start a small business, you are crippled by regulations and taxes, so that it becomes a nightmare before you even open the door.
If you get a job, there is no reason for the employer to pay you a living wage, because if he doesn't, you can get food stamps and government paid childcare and insurance.
If you have more skills and can market them, there is always a lawyer ready and willing to sue you for not complying with this that or the other government regulation.
It has become very difficult for anyone to make a real living without relying on the all-giving government to pick up the slack.
As to women's rights, I believe we should have people's rights. It shouldn't be a competition. I don't think that there should be any difference made between people who are of age. Men need women and women need men. They are not the same, but if a man wants to do a job traditionally performed by a woman or vice versa, that should be between him and his employer, and if one doesn't want you, the next one will. I don't believe that anyone should be forced to hire anyone, and I don't believe that the workplace would be a decent place to be if these issues are forced.
Government has seen fit to enforce these things, and each enforcement limits someones liberty. Then in order to enforce their enforcement, they have to have more and more taxes and regulation. The net result of all this is a permanent underclass, who, while they aren't starving, they are absolutly stymied by the system, and things will never get better for them.
If we really care about the poor, we cannot improve their lot by giving them money, but by giving them hope.
Hope is a free commodity which doesn't even require administration to distribute.
All that is requried is that the government get out of our lives.

Good point. Why should we care about poor starving children this close to Christmas? Don't we have more important thing to worry about like what color iPod I should buy? Maybe they should "Get a job." as you say. Oh, wait, most of them do have jobs, they're called the "working poor." Your ignorant brain may not understand that the poverty line is $20,000 a year. Could you live on $20,000 a year or would you spend it all on yourself in a day? The point is if we want any change or improvement in this country, we have to come together to ensure a bright future for everyone. It's understandable if you have personal causes that you love more, but no one will help you if you don't help anyone else.

So you think everyone in the world should only care about groups they belong to?

Fortunately, most people are HUMAN BEINGS (get your mommy to explain this concept to you) who hate unnecessary suffering.

Most of the poor HAVE jobs, but those jobs don't pay a living wage.

Those of us without jobs can't "get" one, the way you get a gallon of milk from the store, as there' aren't enough jobs for all the people who need them.

You, personally care about no one but yourself, which is your right.

Therefore, no one who isn't YOU shouldn't care about you.

Therefore, never ask any sort of help from anyone in the world ever, no matter what happens to you.

I care about the poor and think that we should help them. I don't think giving them welfare and benefits for not getting a job is helping them. I believe every American has equal opportunity to better themselves. If they do not take up those opportunities than we should develop a system to get them on the right track. We can not help those who do not want it and we can't do everything for them they have to meet us halfway. These are the problems I think most republicans have with libs. As a republican I am willing to pay a little more in taxes to start a program that will help those who want it.those that will get on their feet and take control after being helped. Not ride the system and do nothing for themselves. This is where libs disagree and believe we should all pay more to support them no matter what they do, we should help them because! That way of thinking doesn't fly well with those of us who worked for what we have and TRY to better ourselves daily. I will help but there needs to be limits and requirements.

Sure, I care about the poor. Does that mean I want to support them? No. The reason we have such a poverty problem is because too many people become dependent on government to take care of them (food stamps, welfare, free health care, etc) so there is no incentive to work to better oneself. Until we stop using taxpayer money to let lazy people with 6 kids sit on their butts and do nothing, we will continue to have poverty problems. People are used to having things handed to them instead of earning them. There is no such thing as personal responsibility any more. Just blame it on someone else then look for a handout.

I started from humble beginnings. I was raised on a farm in rural Arkansas. We were very poor, but I took advantage of the free education offered by the state and later went to college, which I worked 2 jobs to pay for. I worked hard, invested my money wisely and today own and operate my own business. I am now a millionaire. If I can do it anyone can.

People are poor because they choose to be poor. Their poverty stems from making bad decisions. Dropping out of school, drinking and/or drug use, teenage pregnancy, gambling, etc. You can't prosper if you make stupid decisions.

i dont care about the poor that are just looking for a gov. handout. The poor that want to better themselves i care a great deal about. There are ways to get out of poverty. We do not need anymore welfare programs, gov't health care or any other programs similiar to that. I do believe however in adding gov't college programs for promising students from poor families. I do not believe in free rides for people that are not trying to better themselves.

What you are saying is ridiculous and extremely selfish.

I care very much about the poor, especially the children, whom I will remind you are innocent. However having said that I do not think the answer is to throw money and big tax programs at them.

Assuring all are educated would go a long way to stop poverty and also states with high unemployment need attention to locate the problem and fix it. Fix the problem instead of simply throwing taxpayers money at it.

Because many poor people are that way because society didn't work out for them. Many poor people are war vets that have mental illnesses now. Many are people who could not afford insurance, and a natural disaster occurs and they are sent to the streets.

I can say I care about the poor, because the poor are still able to have children, and those children become criminals and drug-abusers, causing problems in society. That's how it affects the upper or middle class.

Women's rights? Women have the same rights men have. I know there are still complaints about the pay for women and stuff, but time needs to be given for things to equalize.
