A Harvard political scientist finds that diversity hurts civic life. What happens when a liberal scholar unearths an inconvenient truth?

August 5, 2007

IT HAS BECOME increasingly popular to speak of racial and ethnic diversity as a civic strength. From multicultural festivals to pronouncements from political leaders, the message is the same: our differences make us stronger.

But a massive new study, based on detailed interviews of nearly 30,000 people across America, has concluded just the opposite. Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam has found that the greater the diversity in a community, the fewer people vote and the less they volunteer, the less they give to charity and work on community projects. In the most diverse communities, neighbors trust one another about half as much as they do in the most homogenous settings. The study, the largest ever on civic engagement in America, found that virtually all measures of civic health are lower in more diverse settings

"The extent of the effect is shocking," says Scott Page, a University of Michigan political scientist.

"We can't ignore the findings," says Ali Noorani, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition

Let's say an imaginery man was framed of a murder. Because he was framed, the evidence against him is very strong. The man lives in a conservative place, such as the South, where convictions of murder lead to a death penalty. Or should he keep telling the truth to save himself.

However, his attorney advises him to plea bargain to avoid the death penalty. Should he do it? His life is at risk.

Vincent Foster had precisely 6 months to do the paperwork putting Clinton assets into a trust as required by law. Also the head of FBI was quickly fired or "resigned" just 3-4 days before the Foster suicide? An eye witness that saw NO gun in Foster's dead fingers which left no prints and NO prints were on the revolver's bullets either? Said witness was tormented by numerous FBI agents until he sued ALL of them? Said witness' report was altered AFTER he signed it?
Paramedics noted a small gunshot wound to Foster's neck in their reports but medical examiner noted only the shot from gun found later in Foster's hand? Witnesses noted that,"Foster's body appeared "laid out" with head uphill and gun in hand quite unlike typical suicides?

I have many family members that served in the first Gulf war and they look at me and say this should not be your war. Now here I am looking down at my 2 kids not wanting to leave my generations unfinished business to them. Yes i would be very proud of them if they enlisted into the military as my parents were of me, but i believe that they are better than that. I believe that they are too good to wear combat boots i did it so they would not have to.
