look up the word liberal... then think. the founding fathers were exactly this
"open to new behaviors or opinions and willing to discard traditional values"
so neo cons that bash libs you should thank a liberal for your freedoms not put them down. reguardless what party they stood behind you cant argue the fact that these people were very liberal almost extremeists.
any response????

everybody says that the liberals of today are not what they were then. o.k. are conservatives?
as far as i can tell there is nothing conservative about the administration in office. 1,000,000,000,000 for a war (on credit i might add) tax cuts for the elite, no bid contracts massive debt that YOUR CHILDREN will pay for.
seems to me that this admin. stole the title of conservative and screwed everybody in the process.

Everything the founding fathers stood for and everything they set in writing had already been said before. The difference was that they were willing to put their actions where their mouths were.
I heard this before: some folks think that what atheists call "Pilgrims" (you know, those folks that fled England for their lives and landed at "Plymouth Rock") were liberals.
There is a discreet continuum line, with Liberals at one end and Conservatives at the other end. People get confused, and think that it is not a line, but a circle, and that if people are so extremely Conservative, then the must be Liberal.
For the most part, their clothing, the way they ate, the way they lived their lives, everything, was CONSERVATIVE.
Don't forget: they did not allow anyone except WHITE LANDOWNERS to vote!
They put people into jail and had them flogged with a cat o'nine tails for public cursing, drinking or any other such act!
When you look into a mirror, what do you see?

People evolve over time, Jefferson thought that the government should be completely recycled after every 20 years. This didnt fly, and wouldnt in todays world. The country they founded 200+ years ago, was in a much different world.
This goes for conservatives as well as liberals -- You cant keep the same beliefs dispite the evolution of the world and humanity. Just because liberal values were apropriate at a point in the development of this country, does not mean it is for the long-term maintenance of this country.

The liberalism of the founding fathers is not equivalient to the liberalism of Democrats today. The founding fathers supported low taxes, which was a change from England's previous policies. That does not mean that, in an attempt to be like the founding fathers, we should support high taxes now, since it's a change from our previous policies. It means that, if we want to be like the founding fathers, we should support low taxes, like they did. And if that makes us a conservative by today's standards, then we should be conservatives.

There's a difference between being open to knew ideas and being so unrealistic as to not have a clue. Our Founding Fathers were idealists AND realists. Today's liberals are, by and large, so unrealistic that even our Founding Fathers would not only be ashamed to be put in the same company with them, but would probably have many of them imprisoned. But thanks for another attempt at the same, old argument.

I will agree that their policy and philosophy was liberal, however I would not go so far as to connect them to today's liberals. Had they adopted a conservative policy, then by definition they would submit to England in order to conserve what they had. The modern Democratic party was founded waaaay after our forefathers anyway, and I don't remember George Washington being a socialist.

The "liberals" of the late 1700's were 1000 times more conservative than today's liberal. "Right to bear arms" "State rights and small federal government" "No income tax" and "Freedom to practice religion" ? If they were alive today they would most definitely have voted republican down the board.
But yes, by definition, the founding fathers would have been considered "liberal" compared to the British Loyalists.

maybe we should thank a military veteran for our freedoms. we should thank a republican for abolition of slavey.
republican-believes that the strength of our nation lies in the individual and that each persons dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.
one who favors a republic as the best form of govt.
a republic-a supreme order in which the power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them.
liberal also means free from bigotry.
bigotry means intolerant.
you seem to be intolerant of reps.
and traditional values are much better than narcissistic position.

The problem really is that today people don't understand what it is to be conservative or liberal. If they did the cons would be the ones screaming about the unconstitutional wiretapping and the libs would be religious.
