Selling their home 2 years ago is a real big problem. What happened to the money from the sale? Did it go for medical expenses you can prove? If not, mom amd dad have a problem as do you.

Here in Minnesota the government can go back 5 years on sales of assets. I'm sure every state has something like this in place. Unfortunately this is something that your parents should have planned for but I don't feel this is right. Are you the power of attorney? There are so many privacy laws in place so it's hard to say if you are being screwed. Get things documented on what rights you have with the appropriate legal mumbo jumbo.

i'm told {it hasn't happened to me yet and let's not be making too many bets that it won't, eh?} that

your parents can't go on Medicaid {government pays for nursing home care} until their assets have been nearly exhausted on buying their own care.

further, funds from assets sold within three years of their Medicaid application must be returned and used for their privately paid care before they'll be eligible for Medicaid.

you need to consult your state's department for Medicaid on this. If your parents are eligible, you need to make application immediately.

If they aren't eligible and you are custodian of their funds, you need to pay this bill.
