Is it? I hadn't remembered. Isn't it sad that if the Imperialist Japanese government at that time had accepted the terms of surrender after Hiroshima that Nagasaki would have been spared? Why did it take an additional city and another 74,000 dead before the government realized that they'd better do what they were told? I agree with the answerers so far that the bombs should have and needed to be dropped as they were since millions of lives were, indeed, saved.

Sure, I agree with the mayor, unfortunately, not all the nuclear powers do. I don't think the US should get rid of anything while places like Iran and North Korea still have nuclear capabilities.

Do I agree with the Mayor of Nagasaki and his quote....ABSOLUTELY. I cannot believe the selfishness of some of the answers here although at the same time they don't surprise me. It is OK to kill 74,000 Japanese -- no problem, but 3,000 people die in the WTC and we are screaming "Kill the Bastards" and people are calling for the nuking of Afghanistan. It is not all about us, people. There are other nations in the world and the Nagasaki mayor said "ALL NUCLEAR POWERS, should eliminate their stockpiles. Here is a link to the full story. http://news.bostonherald.com:80/international/asiaPacific/view.bg?articleid=1016253 His remarks are aimed mainly at the Prime Minister of Japan, He didn't focus his words only toward the US so why is everybody getting so upset. He is not ordering the US to UNILATERILY destroy their stockpile of nuclear weapons. He knows that is not going to happen. He is only making a statement of principles, because he does not want to see what happened to his country in 1945 happen again, neither in Japan or any other country. No nation in this world has the right to do that to another nation WAR SUCKS, my friends. It should never be accepted and only in rare instances should it be justified. The goal should be to eliminate it and all WMDs. No more nukes for Pakistan, No more nukes for Israel, no more nukes for North Korea and Iran, and India and Russia, and the USA, especially the USA.
I also want to address the MYTH that bombing Hiroshima and Nakasaki was necessary to save millions of lives. That is simply horse****. The Japanese economy had been totally devastated and there were elements in the government that were already on the brink of surrendering. Truman had this information, but the bombings were carried out more for the purpose of jump starting the Cold War and impressing the Soviet Union with our military prowess than for the purpose of bringing Japan to its knees. General Eisenhower, himself, stated bluntly in a 1963 Newsweek interview that “the Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing”. and Truman's chief of staff, Admiral William Leahy, stated in his memoirs that “the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender.”
The last thing I want to say here is if it is unthinkable and unacceptable for the citizens of this country to be subjected to the horrors of Nuclear attack and its aftermath, by what human principle can we advocate that it is OK to do it to others.

Personally think it would of shortened the war in Iraq ans Afghanistan, we have become so politically correct in todays world that it restricts our military from winning whatever conflict we are in. Had that been true in the '40's the war would have lasted allot longer. Collateral damage is in effect a part of war and cannot be eliminated, even though the press seems to think that it can and jumps on every chance to show our men and women have caused this. I believe best option would have been decimate a city and then say either give them up, or we move to the next city and do the same of course not PC but the problem of Osama would be taken care of by now

The name of the plane was Bock's Car.

And no, I don't agree with the mayor of Nagasaki. Dropping the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved millions of lives.

I may be wrong, but I believe thew date was August 6, 1945. The name of the plane that dropped the bomb was The Enola Gay.

The second A-bomb -- nicknamed "Fat Boy" -- was dropped on Nagasaki by a plane named "Bock's Car".

The rest of your rant is not a question, just a worthless diatribe. The nuclear genie is out of the bottle, and nothing we do can ever force it back in again.

Me thinks the name was "Box Car". The mayor is dreaming if he thinks everyone should get rid od their stock piles of nukes. It was because Japan and it's uncivilized acts against humanity that brought the HEAT down on them. What is it with all these mamby-pamby revisionist who want to re-write history until it is sterile, null and void.......HHMMMM? They got what they deserved! Nuff said!!
