Jihad vs. McWorld is the title of a 1992 essay by political scientist Benjamin R. Barber, in which he puts forth a theory that describes the struggle between "McWorld" (globalization and the corporate control of the political process) and "Jihad" (tradition and traditional values, often in the form of extreme nationalism or religious orthodoxy and theocracy).

You can read the essay here: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/199203/barber

Also, is it more complicated that this; are corporate interests manipulating the religious orthodoxy to do their bidding (e.g. the Christian-right’s support of the Iraq war)?

I asked two of my republican friends why they weren't interested in teaching careers. They both remarked that teacher and professor salaries suck.

Is this why so many teachers and professors are democrats? Because republicans can make more money elsewhere?

I look at the responses on this site and I am completely disheartened. The boys in this country are taught (in liberal schools) to run away from the call to duty. The enrollment rate of young men in college is at an all time low. The district attorney is overwhelmed by fathers who abandon their responsibility. What is happening and WHO could possibley believe that the United States is not going to be destroyed from within?

This is a question about our MEN. I am fully aware that our girls have their own set of issues.

I tried to talk to you and help you, so you could see where your problems are.

But you have only insulted me, AND you don't respect non violence.

You prefer violence because it is your "strong suite", having spent billions on the ability to wage war and kill people on a massive scale, you are not going to abandon it now for a peaceful plan.

I tried to help you, but you only insult me.

You know what, most people in other countries want you to fail in Iraq, they don't feel bad when you get killed by insurgents AT ALL,

But you are stupid enough to insult the foreigners that want a non-violent way out for you.

Shame on you, you don't know how to treat your allies

YOU owe me an apology.

Except for maybe 2 or 3 congressmen or senators, non of the Republican leaders who are all for the Iraq war send their kids to Iraq.

I can understand why democrats wont want to, because they oppose the war, but should'nt the Republicans set an example for America by sending their kids to Iraq in large numbers if they really believe in their cause?

Why do they insist on harping on SUPPORT THE TROOPS and if you don't you're supporting the terrorists, but.............

when our military men and women come back they run into s*%^t like Walter Reed?

Jose Ramos, a student at George Mason University in Virginia, lost an arm during combat in 2004. He praised the medical care at Walter Reed — once he could get an appointment.

He described having to wait four hours after a scheduled appointment to get in, as well as rescheduling follow-up visits.

"I constantly had to re-explain my symptoms and medical history. It was like starting all over again every time I had an appointment," Ramos said.

Navigating the VA system was just as bad, Ramos said. "The VA system, much like the military medical outprocessing system, is a labyrinth of offices and paperwork that no one seems to want to help with."
