Government?
The government is nothing more than our elected officials. Local, State and Federal. With each individual position regulated by a certain number of years as defined by their terms.

It isn't the Government being afraid, nor the public that vote them in. What it is in the most general of description, is a clash of definitions.
"Marriage" just like "Confessional" "Baptism" "Circumcision" "Last rites" and "Communion" is a Biblical term for a specific sacrament.

Within the strict understanding of Unction, or Eucharist, "Marriage" is defined by the Union of a Man and a Woman, recognized by God of the Old Testament (or Torah)
NO ONE, will ever change the meaning. The phrase itself "Gay Marriage" is an oxyMoron.

Besides, i seriously doubt that same sex partners REALLY want to change 4 thousand year old sacrament.
What they want is basic rights, choices and respect. They want the legal right to make Critical care choices. They want equal tax and insurance benefits, and they want to walk in public, holding hands with their significant other of 40 years, and NOT have people look at them in disgust.
..And as soon as same sex couples are granted these rights, we will see the bitterness of this whole issue disappear..

It's a wedge issue. sad as it is, very few people will sit down to really try to understand a complex issue like rewritting the tax code, millitary spending, farm subsaties, etc. They're dry issues and more than a little bit dull. Politicans think that the only way you can get people involved in (and let's be honest giving money to) political campaigns is to make everything an emotional issue. Right or wrong there are a lot of people out there who don't like the idea of two men kissing or having sex it each other. It works them up and makes them uncomfortable and angry. There is alos something in the bible about homosexuallity....but it's in the same chapter that says you can be stoned to death for wearing cloths made of different threds or planting diffent crops too close together so maybe it might be time to stop beating the god drum on this one and admit that it might have been the best wisdom of the time but it has no relevences in today's society. To wrap up a very longwinded answer gay marrige is an issue because it only has two sides, for and against, solving real probles takes compromise, deal making and thought.

The government is not "afraid" of gay marriage. Our politicians have been elected by bringing the morality issues into the governments arena.

This started the minute Prohibition was passed and has continued throughout the decades unabated.

It never ceases to amaze me that the majority of Americans want the government to be our mommies & daddies and regulate us from hurting ourselves.

Our government is too large and too powerful, and regulating personal CONTRACTS (that is really all marriage is) is degrading and insulting.

the precedence is maximum individuals do no longer want their little ones turning out to be up believing it really is an suited determination for a fashion of life. If homosexuality and heterosexuality are treated both, than their youthful little ones will imagine that to be gay is okay. it really is uncomplicated prejudice and shortage of understanding. There are 3 MILLION gay human beings interior u . s . a . meaning there 297 MILLION HETEROSEXUALS. communicate about homophobia. If there is a few thing it really is a call, it has were given to be sexual orientation. I abhor the argument that gay marriage leads is a slippery slope. they say if we enable it than adults will be marrying minors and animals. it will be an exciting debate if a goat ought to CONSENT to marriage. yet because that animals can not consent, i do no longer see the way it really is even remotely close to to 2 human beings, inspite of sex, identifying on to dedicate themselves to at least one yet another. If the regulation variations so as that 12 years can marry, than they ought to allow 12 year olds to drink, vote, personal guns, strive against in wars, artwork, andcontinual. there's a reason we've age limits. there is not any slippery slope.

It's not. But they don't like it - they think it's gross. But the government shouldn't be able to govern based on their own bias and prejudice. They should only be able to govern on what is and isn't Constitutionally acceptable. BUT since many people think that gay marriage is gross, they don't stop (in fact just the opposite) the government from taking away their rights.

Two consenting adults sweating it out and reading each others belts is one thing but to give justification to that deviant type of life (even animals have better sense) is better left in the gay bars and trans caves than in the marriage business!!

Its not so much the govt, its regular people and the institution of marriage itself that loses if gay marriage is enshrined in law.

When you stretch the definition of something, you weaken the true definition of the subject. Likewise, by allowing gay marriage to go forward, you are using tax dollars to fund the actie destruction of the family itself. (not to mention America)

God doesnt allow nations that are immoral to stand.

The government is not afraid of gay marriage. Political leaders, with very little spine, are afraid that may lose political support (power), so they continue to add to injustice to bolster their power.

Because it goes directly against the majority of Americans moral beliefs, just like the opposing view believes that it does not. Two different rules of morality, two different views that will never see eye to eye.

It will affect them personally because they will not get votes from the opposing view if they make a stand. What is a politicians number one job? To get reelected and taking a stand for or against loses votes and endorsements.

The government is not afraid of gay marriage.

It's a wedge issue to garner votes. Nothing more. They're are no issues one way or the other. It's political pandering to the conservative base.
