As far as I know the US has sent nearly 20,000 troops to Afghanistan and Canada has sent over 2000. The US has had 341 military casualties in Afghanistan, and Canada has had 39.

Now, considering that Canada's population is just over 30 million, and US is around 300 million... percentage-wise, Canada has sent the same amount of troops and had a higher casualty rate. (I am only talking percentages)

My question is, how can some Americans say that Canadian's are sitting with our thumbs up our a**es watching the Americans do the dirty work. I am not even insinuating that Canada is doing more...

What I am asking is this:

HOW is it that Canadians have become the punchline in US military humour when we have sent and lost (percentage-wise) a comparable amount of good and brave men and women?

If I were to go to another country, I would be forced to speak their native tongue. Why do I have to learn another language here in my home country? They are the ones coming over here by choice, so they need to learn English. (They = illegal immigrants)

In 1996, my ex and I obtained a marriage license, had a ceremony with the justice of the peace, and the license was signed. We were told to officially record it and we did not do so. Not on purpose.. just both slackers really and forgetful. We never received any certified copy. We were together for 7 years, had a child, and split up 3.5 years ago.

Were we ever legally married? Do I need to get a divorce? The question has come up now as I'd like to buy a home and the mortgage broker asked if I'd ever been married and if so, when was I divorced. I'm not sure what to tell him!

I've called the county and the state and they both say I need to ask a lawyer. When I searched the county records a few years ago I found no record of our marriage. What does this mean? Does the common law thing apply instead? If so, do I still have to get divorced?

Basically the judge said, "If you plead guilty, I will suspend the charges for these infractions." It was a traffic court ticket I had to take care of if that puts it into a more meaningful context.

I assumed the charges would be "dismissed" but it seems that can only occur if you plead "not guilty". So why should I plead guilty if the charges are going to be suspended (dropped?) ?

I'd like to let President-elect Calderon know that the mean-spirited, self-serving, wealthy, xenophobic Congress and the idiot-in-chief don't speak for all Americans when they agreed to let a 700 mile fence be built between here and Mexico. The hubris, arrogance and foolishness are almost beyond comprehension.
How do I make some small gesture to the government of Mexico or to their President-elect that there are a few Americans who still value our neighbors and respect America's founding principles?
Any suggestions on the most effective means of communication?
Thanks.

I bought a new home in April 2005, but since a few months, I am receiving letters from the council addressed to the previous owner. i think they are reminders for not paid parking tickets or similar (I can se this through the enveloppe, final red-coloured reminders..). I return the letters to the council, informing them this person does not longer live here. I stil receive letters from them, i guess shortly a bailiff will be knocking on my door? What can i do to avoid this?

I've heard that you can do more then on job in the Coast Guard, Such as being a CG boarding officer, Master at arms(CG's military police) and be a cook at the same time.

If this is true, can one be A CG boarding officer, Master at arms and a rescue swimmer at the same time.

If it's not to much trouble does it work like that in the Air Force.

starbucks pay their workers $1 a day for growing ethiopian coffee, they somehow feel like they are doing a benefit to these poor farmers by buying their coffee, the truth is there is a demand for the coffee and by fair trade standards STARBUCKS have a duty to pay the farmers 45% of the price of the coffee they charge in their stores. Starbucks pays 45% to jamaican blue mountain coffee growers per pack that is sold in their stores but the ethiopian coffee growers get only 5% this is discrimination and unfair. Starbucks need pay up to the ethiopian farmers its their right!
