If I were to go to another country, I would be forced to speak their native tongue. Why do I have to learn another language here in my home country? They are the ones coming over here by choice, so they need to learn English. (They = illegal immigrants)

It would take a total ignorance sweeping over this nation of immigrants, regarding our history of tolerating first-generation newcomers, since we know that their children will be fluent English speakers.
You have made a start, I see.

I think its 27 states that do have English as their official language.NM has English and Spanish, and I think Florida does too.
There are several bills floating around in congress as we speak to make English the official language of the US.
The states would still have the right to use any language they wanted to under 2 or 3 of them.
I'm for English as our official language, but not a law that says you cant speak another,I would be against any prosecution if you didn't speak only English.
.English is the language of our government already.
NO AMERICAN SHOULD BE FORCED TO LEARN SPANISH.I speak Spanish because I chose to learn,I also speak several others but don't try to force your language on legal Americans.Numbers do not equate to power, don't get confused, power is money and money is power.Americans will still control the money. It doesn't matter how many of you there are.Numbers don't equate to power,in politics.

I live in Arizona and next month were going to try and pass a law where English is Arizona's official language, and I hope it passes.Although, I must say that I am not against illegal immigration, but I do think if they want to come and live here the least they can do is speak English and if the can't speak it then they must not want to be here that bad and should go home.If I went to Mexico I wouldn't expect the whole country to learn English for me!

For once I totally agree with you.I was stationed for 21/2 years in Germany & the first thing they had me do is go to classes at night to learn German. When I was stationed in Italy I had to go to school to learn their language.Granted it was not a lot of their language but enough to get by. I though part of the process to become a American Citizan was you needed to speak English But the one thing I disagree with you on is when you say they=illegal immigrants , they are not the only ones. Some LEGAL immigrants do not speak english either.

I think that everyone who ALREADY speaks english should learn to speak properly before asking questions like this. Its "An" English only law, not "a" English only law.

But you're right, I think its silly to go to another country without knowing the language! How will you get around, get a job or even eat if you cant speak the language. I had to learn Spanish so I could order tacos at this mexican grocery store because the girl only spoke spanish! It doesnt make any sense
at any rate, this great country that you hold so dear started by a bunch of people from all around the world coming to one place, speaking whatever they please. English is a mish-mash of a bunch of other languages. Just deal with it.

IMHO, it's gonna take a lot more common sense than anyone in congress has now. I agree with you 100%. I don't mind immigrants, it's the ILLEGAL that bothers me. I also think it's beyond ridiculous that they will allow someone who can't even read the drivers' test or answer the questions have a driver's license. I was in the dl office in Texarkana, Texas once and had to wait endless amounts of time in line while they hunted for a Spanish speaker to translate the instructions to the person at the head of the line. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I agree with you completely. The chose to come here, so they should have to learn our language. If I moved to their home country, I would at least attempt to learn the language so I could communicate, and out of respect for the people who live there.

You can tell them that learning Englis is very easy now a days...!A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

Most people seem to be missing the point of your very important question........That it needs to be done, and quickly.

The issues are wide and varied, but the general problem is that we cannot and should not be forced to print every government document in 17 languages (or more, 17 is just the number that the drivers tests are available in in my state). Schools, government offices, hospitals, courts, etc should not be forced to provide translators for people who live in this country and claim to be "entitled" to it.

You are entitled to immigrate here legally, assimilate, and be a productive part of our culture. We are founded on that, read the dang history books! Or the Statue of Liberty for crying out loud.

Preserve your native culture on your own dime. Don't expect the U.S. to do it for you. ASSIMILATE!!! or go back to somewhere you don't have to. My ancestors did, the new immigrants can too.

Sorry, I got carried away.

well for starters, no, you wouldn't be forced to speak their native language, you could likely get by in a lot of countries just on english, or on body language and pointing, etc.

for seconds, illegal immigrants aren't the only ones who don't speak english, lots of legal immigrants only speak enough english to scrape by, or promptly forget what they had to learn to pass their immigration... mostly this is older people.

finally, the way to get an english only law passed is to kill all the non-white people. you'd better get started.
