Basically the judge said, "If you plead guilty, I will suspend the charges for these infractions." It was a traffic court ticket I had to take care of if that puts it into a more meaningful context.

I assumed the charges would be "dismissed" but it seems that can only occur if you plead "not guilty". So why should I plead guilty if the charges are going to be suspended (dropped?) ?

So actually the judge didn't set any conditions or anything. It seems like they just wanted me to plead guilty so they could count it as a conviction, but with no repercussions to me. I just want to make sure this isn't going to come back to bite me in the *** in the future! :)

Oh and I didn't pay any fines either! The 3 specific infractions were: no california driver's licence (corrected and showed to judge), no front plate and modified emissions device (both applied to a previous vehicle which I traded). I showed a "Notice of Transfer of Liability" for those two charges.

So no fines, no charges (that I need to deal with), no worries?

uspended charges means that if you abide by whatever conditions the judge sets (ie:fixing the infraction) then the charges will be put off and if you don't get into any more trouble will be removed from your record after some set amont of time (usually 6 months or a year).

He probably wanted you to plead guilty so you would pay the fine but he took it off your record that could cause insurance to go up.

He gave you a bargain.

You can see now how plea bargains don't necessarily show the person is innocent or guilty of a crime/infraction.

If you plead guilty it will remain on your record, even if you plead not guilty and get nothing it can still come back and bite you if someone looks on your arrest record. The best kept secret in the courthouse is no matter what unlessyou get it expunged off your record you will have it following you the rest of your life in your arrest records. I know they used mine against me years ago.
