I am afraid that I can't find that information through the military or the DOD because I am not a family member.

First of all, your best source is going to be that persons family. The person you're looking for might only be wounded and not dead. However, the source link a complete list of all casualties in Iraq. It's in alphabetical order.

Are you asking if there is a way to find out if somebody died - or the circumstances of his/her death?

Generally the best people to ask are the person's family.

The DOD also releases limited information on casualties in press releases. They can be found here:
