I'm looking to have a freshwater fishtank (I'm not fond of saltwater ones), and I was wondering: What kinds of things should I get for it and what should I have around in the case of mishaps (water's wrong, etc. I guess a "First aid" kit for the tank/fish).

What kind of filter is best? What's a good kind of gravel to get? Are live plants better than fake ones?

I know my way around my local pet and fish specific stores, but is there anything that's better to buy online?

Note: I've already got a tank- I think it's 29 gallons, I should probably check the tag again.

My fish tank filter is so noisey I turn it off when I'm home and put it on when I go to work. Will this harm my fish?

I would like the largest aquarium with hood I could get for less that $200 total including filter, air pump, and heater. I know I could get a 55 gallon at walmart for $100, but from experience I know their air pumps and filter are horrible. I would like to buy this for my son for christmas, probably $250 at the MOST. I would like to buy everything new. My son can make a tank stand after christmas in advanced woods class at school.

I bought a pair of a hi fin red banded goby and red banded pistol shrimp yestarday, and the pistol shrimp started to furiously dig threw the whole night, and right away when he got in the tank.

But today, I'm not seeing them anywhere. I don't hear the pistol shrimp snapping either. Should I worry about this?

Thank you!

I have a 10 gallon. Aquarium has 4 fake plants, small black gravel, and 3 caves. Heater is at 78 and there is a 70 gallon per hour filter. I have 2 african cichlids and 3 cory cats in my ten gallon. Africans are only about 1/2 and inch long as I have raised them since fry. Cory cats are 1 inch long. I know in the future I will be far overstocked. I will be able to buy a larger fish tank in the future. So my questions are, 1 cichlid is very dominate over the other fish and is territorial. With the size of the fish and the aquarium size, I was not anticipating this so early in my cichlids life. How do I make this cichlid less aggressive?? Any old tricks or anything? I know cichlids are territorial by nature. Also, can I feed all my fish sinking African cichlid pellets. I figure these would be ok for my cory cats too as they are bottom feeders. Also, If I put a betta or a type of fast swimming fish in my aquarium would that help even out the aggression of my cichlid. Thank you very much!!

I had 4 female mollies and 2 males, until my poor female died. She was smaller than all the other mollies, and was extremely shy! I mean, she hid in corners and stayed near the top and never came near the other fish when they ate, and I tried to give her more food but she didn't come to it. Anyway, is 3 females and 2 males ok? One of my males is pretty calm and doesn't bug the girls too much...

I plan to take a 4 day trip during this coming weekend, but what should i do w/ my fish?

they are trapical fish, and i use a tank w/ light as heater. should i leave the light on for the entire weekend?
will they be okay if i dont feed them for 3 days?

also, i noticed that the algea or do u call them lichen? is growing faster than before, now that i can see it on my plant and tank, is it because i turned the light on too long? i have a algea eater, and it wasnt like this in the first month of setting up the tank.

thanks

Got you, this is for the people who think they can get away with putting their goldfish in a bowl.

Goldfish should be placed in a tank minimum size of 10 gallons, NOT in a bowl, as stated on this website: http://www1.epinions.com/content_3185614980

Voice your opinions on this and what you think should be done about this.

I will not choose a best answer, I will let the community vote for one.

I have a 10 gallon tank and I want to set up a really good aquarium. I don't want to have to clean it all the time like I did with my beta fish. Should I go with fresh or salt water? What kind of fish should I get? (I want more than one kind). What other stuff do I need to buy?? I just need a lot of information of aquariums, types of fish, etc.

hi, yesterday my son won a goldfish and small (2ltre) tank ...today we have been and bought a 43 ltre aquarium with built in filter system and air pump, which my husband has always wanted.. we have set it up and has been with water since early afternoon.. how soon can we introduce goldfish to its new home? i have partially cleaned out its small tank as its looking murky and i am aware of amonia, which i cant see, since doing this the fish has started swimming as though it is agitated and frequently rises to surface as thouhg sucking at air.. can anyone give me any sensible advice as what to do short term? i really dont want to lose this fish, my son has already given it a name..'chocolate cake' (hes only 2) thankyou in advance

I put a small tank in my baby's room to use as a nightlight and for entertainment. I think the light might be in the room for this, but we'll see. Anyway, will the constant light (daylight and then tank light) bother the fish? Do they need some dark for rest or anything? Also, I keep a CD Player on at night to play lullaby music for the baby. It is fairly quiet, but the only space for it is right by the tank. Will the noise bother the fish? There's just a couple of tiny fish in there, but I do care about their feelings and general well being!
