Hi. I've just bought a new aquarium filter, I wanted to know, for how long should it be on? is it supposed to run 24 hours a day?

I hear small saltwater aquariums are hard to keep. What's different about this one or is it false advertisement?

Read this, and then I will ask a new question. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=At3LWL_1vC3y.wPg_fSohIfsy6IX?qid=20070603070145AAIteEK
I totally cleaned the tank, changed the filter, water, etc, and filled it back up. I conditioned the water, and am now letting it cycle. I got some ph strips, and will test it till it comes out clean, or safe to add fish.

My question is: is there any thing else besides researching what fish to get? I am planning on a tank of tropicals, so I will have the tank run around 75-78 degrees. I have heard danios, barbs, mollies. I don’t really know what species is tropical, so I stopped here first. I figure I have a few weeks to learn from you guys, so here I am. Just give me some advice, and suggest some good, hardy species, for once I’ve gotten the tank to where it should be.

Thanks, and have a good week!

Ok, i bought a blue jack dempsey...and when i put him in my cichlid tank he wasnt going well and was getting attacked. This was at the point where i thought cichlids and jack dempseys were alike and go in the same water. So i took him out and he turned pure black. So now hes in a pure freshwater tank, its a community tank and i can see small spots of his original colors but he is still solid black and on certain times of the day he turns into a lighter black kinda like gray...its hard to explain but i would like to know whats gpoing on?

i have three mollys, one platy, and two catfish in my freshwater aquarium. I use purified tap water when i clean their tank, and decorations include some real coral and shells, but i think everything in there is either fake or from the ocean. Today i noticed a bunch of tiny little bean shaped animals at the bottom of the tank, and since my mollys and platy have already had babies that look nothing like these bean things, i figured it was catfish babies. Looking closer, the animals are clear, with what looks like a bean shape shell, and they move around using legs at one side of their shell. I tried to take a picture, but my camera couldn't focus in enough, so i'll just say they are about a millimeter long, and i can see their organs through their bodies and shells. They look kind of like clams, but i doubt i would have clams appear in my tank, since they would have to come from a parent clam, which i have never had, What the hell are these things and are they going to harm my fish?

I have 2 albino oscars and wanted to ask how long they live? The older one of the two is about 4 years old. He has stopped eating pellits and live food and seems to have a hole in his right gill flap. Also the skin on the flap looks old and crater like. I think he is dying and feel he is suffering. What should I do?? Is he dying of old age? ANYONE know???

Everyone keeps saying to use bleach but I was wondering if alcohol would work too since it evaporates.

My tank was fully cycled quite a while ago. Now though my levels never rise, Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate, stay at basically zero at all times. About my tank: In my 20 gallon tank I have 20 things, and the filter is a bio-wheel actually meant for a 55 gallon tank. The water always stays crystal clear. (I know what a horrible problem to have?)

So do I still have to do the water changes? Or are water changes unnecessary unless the levels start to rise? Is it safe not to do any water changes until the levels rise?

not trying to scare the fish from going in but it is pretty deep and I thought it would look kind of cool if there was some sort of "glow" inside.

Well, my goldfish is fairly new, I got him around a week ago. When I got him, he was a normal golden goldfish, nothing special. But now he is developing these black spots on his head, scales and his upper fin (the one on top of him), I dunno if he is developing a disease/skin condition or if he is just growing late spots. All the other fish in the tank with him were either spotted or gray. Any ideas?

*Also, he's developed this weird pattern. He'll go to the middle of the tank, then jolt up to one of the corners, and he'll keep repeating this. Is he just bored and needs a friend?

my 2 goldfish in an outdoor pond are frisky. Does that mean there might be baby ones? Will they eat all of them? How long until I might see some?

I'm planning to get 4 kuhli loaches to place into an empty aquarium. The tank is set up according to the fish's preference-fine gravel, heavily planted and lots of caves.I read that these loaches are masters of hide and seek and are nocturnal. My question:

1.Since the fish only comes out in the dark, what is the best way to view them?

2.Is it ok to introduce other bottom dwellers?I'm planning for something more active like rainbow sharks.

3.Will using dither fish coax kuhli loach out of hiding?

I have two goldfish (1 comet, 1 common) in a tank (10 gallon). They recently started fighting and now the comet who is 1 year male, about 2inches has a rip in his tail fin. I don't know if it's the common, 6 years 3.5inches, who ripped it or if it was the plants. I want to seperate them but I don't have a spare tank.
I have a male betta in a 6 gallon right now. My question is, will it be okay to put the male goldfish into the betta fish tank for like acouple of hours, and move the betta to a smaller tank??? So can I put a goldfish in betta water??? Will that be safe???

thanks.

I'm looking for any info on snails available...food, care, needs, habitat, anything...
I'm under the understanding that they eat algae and left over food debris around the tank...
also that they need a heater and a good filtration system within the tank they live...
I've heard that they molt and that they need a special substration to bury themselves in when they molt but I have no idea if that's true or how to handle that...
any info on snails greatly appreciated...I haven't gotten one yet but I have always wanted to and now my friend says he'll get me one for my new tank if I do all the research needed by the time he visits this weekend (already have two fresh water tanks set up currently -this will be my third for now..I already have a kitten, a dwarf hammie, a Euro hammie, and one tank I have is a ten gallon with four zebra danio, an african dwarf froggie, and a male betta which has been set up as such for almost a year my other tank is a five gal with two feeder goldfish)
info plz

I have a 72 gallon freshwater tank that I am thinking of coverting over to saltwater. My question is mainly about filtration. I currently have 2 Emperor 400's on my tank. These are power filters and they filter 400 gallons of water per hour each. So together they can filter 800 gallons of water per hour. Is this enough to sustian a saltwater tank of this size? Thanks!
