My betta splenden (known as Gooza) is floating vertically at the top of his tank and wont eat. He also has a silverish tinge to his scales that he never had before plus when he tries to skim he cant do it properly. Ive looked online and i think its either something called velvet or a swim bladder problem i cant seem to make him better. Please help he is the most awesome fish and i got him as a 1st yr anniversary present from my boyfriend.

I got Gooza in early march this year...not sure how old he was when i got him. He lives alone in about a 4litre tank (a rough guess). I have another betta splenden called Booger. i got him at the same time and he has the same size tank and diet etc and he is perfectly healthy. So it must be the water or Gooza is just more delicate.

If it is a swim bladder problem then there is no hope for it, and if it is velvet or slime disease then it sounds pretty serious. It is probably going to die. However, you could try putting in some medicine for slime and velvet-Ocean Free brand has a type of medicine for velvet, slime and white spot(ick). It might be too stressed in the present environment-make sure the temperature is correct, the space is big enough for it, no other fish are bullying it, etc.etc. How old is it?

That sounds like classic velvet to me. I recommend you treat with a good ich medication such as Quick Cure asap. Yes, ich medications will also treat a range of parasites, including velvet. Also cover his bowl or tank to allow no light in during the treatment as velvet can use light as an energy source. With quick treatment you can probably still save him.

I will agree with MM. I also think your little guy has Velvet. The symptoms are gray or gold/yellowish brown colored dust spots all over its body and fins, clamped fins, labored breathing. You can use Coppersafe or Malachite Green. It's best to raise temp to 80º-85ºF during treatment. Add Aquarium Salt and Aquari-Sol to your water conditioning regimen

Good Luck!

swim bladder can be hard to treat -- you can try maracyn and maracyn2 in combination -- they are antibiotics you get at the petstore.

if price is a concern try a salt bath -- use about 1 tablespoon for 5 gallons or 1/2 a teaspoon for a gallon dissolved into the water. use aquarium salt or canning/pickling salt.

some people also use epsom salts at about 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons.

in general don't feed him for 3 days and then try to get him to eat chopped up green peas. frozen krill might also work if hes not going for the peas.
