i looked in my tank today and my cichlid and redtailed shark both have a tear in there top fins wuts rong did they get in a fight or parasites ( help im clueless)

If it is white, they have a disease that is easily cured. If it is just a tear, it is possible that they "fought". You need to monitor them more as to investigate. From what you are asking, it's hard to tell. Clean your tank often, this might help in the case of any illness or disease.

If it's just a few minor tears in one fin I would say a fight. Watch carefully for any signs of fin rot though... usually a white rotten looking area in the fins. If that shows up you will need to treat with an antibiotic like Maracyn 2

If it's a tear, they fought. An infection would mean that it starts off raggedy and eventually eats its way up to the fish's body. Make sure the water conditions are good and it will heal up quickly.
Fin rot is much different and requires medication.
