When I first put the water in the tank should the gravel be in place already or should I put the gravel in afterwards?

I want to put substrate beneath the gravel so if I add the water to a tank that has the gravel in it already wont it get mixed up?

I'm looking for an aquarium that is not the standard boxy rentagular common type ones. Do you know of any that look very nice. Please post link to review. Thanks.

Okay, I just do not EVEN know what do do here. My male betta (whom we just put in yesterday) has apparently eaten the left eye of one of the 5 neons that are in the 10 gallon tank with him. This happened at feeding time, about 10 minutes ago, when food pellets were sinking and the fish were doing that darting around eating thing, and we believe that perhaps it was not necessarily aggressive. We think this because he is not at all being aggressive toward Mr. One Eye or any of the other neons and is, in fact, in among them without any aggression. (My husband just walked in and said, "I think it was just a food mistake.")

My question is what to do about One Eye. Should we humanely euthanize him, or see if he recovers? (And, obviously, we should watch the betta's behavior to see if he continues aggressive or not).

We put a rubber mat under the pump to reduce vibration noise and by the next day 5 of our fish are dead and two are dying. We have a salt water tank w/live rock. The entire tank now smells like rubber and so does the live rock. What happened? We have actually seen rubber mats suggested for this purpose? What do we do now except thouroughly clean our tank and mourn our lost fish? Does anyone know what would have caused this?

Can someone with extensive saltwater experience please recommend a good website and/or book for setting up a saltwater aquarium?

I have over 20 years of freshwater experience, and would really like to start a saltwater aquarium. Of course I want to research it as much as I can before I attempt it.

And before you tell me to "google" it, I have, and there are so many different sites and opinions on the subject, its very difficult to know what the best info is.

Thank you.

What is more precise on measurements?? When I tested my Nitrates correctly with shaking the bottles like they are supposed to be I got a tough to read somewhere between 40 - 80. Then I did a test strip water from the same tank and got a reading of 20 on the test strip? Which one should I depend on more?

Just for kicks I took a sample before and after I did a 20% water change on a 120 gallon tank. I'm sure the water had less nitrate after because I know the water has somewhere around 7 nitrate in it. Yet the tests showed almost the same somewhere around 40 - 80. When looking at the card the 40 and 80 look the exact same color to me so it might have started out at 70 then whent down to 50 after??

Thanks for help!

I had an African Dwarf Frog in with fish before and it died.
Can you put guppies, neon tetras, Zebra Danios, red Wag platties,
and another platty(I cannot remember what species of platty that one is but it is bright orange) with an African Dwarf Frog?

I have a male betta, which is in its own tank. I also have 2 bala sharks (which are still small, about 3 inches long) and 2 dojo loaches. Would it be OK to put the betta in with the other fish? I don't like the tank he's in right now, it's too small.

I just started the tank this week and there are only two mollies in there. They are spending lots of time behind the plants near the bottom. Is this normal or do you think they may be having a hard time adjusting to the new environment?
