It sound like fin rot. Just keep in mind fin rot is a very general term. It can be caused by bacteria, and fungus. Also it's often a secondary infection. I would pull out the big guns, and hit it with trisulfa, or an another broad spectrum antibotic (Broad ~= efects both gram negative, and positive bacteria). Also an antifungal med might be in order. Be sure to keep his water clean, and warm (80-85F).

Also read the betta talk page on diseases. Velvet, and other disease are hard to notice if you don't know what you are looking for.

PS- It's not Ich/Ick. Ich is small white dots that look like grains of salt. That said ich can depress the immune system and lead to fin rot.

How do you know so certainly that it's not fin rot? That has all the markers of fin rot. I would suggest you treat for a bacteria infection. Clean the tank well and do a 50-60% water change. CLean out the filter and remove the carbon. Add 2 tablespoons of salt per 5 gallons and treat with Furnace or Marycn as directed for 7-10 days. No doubt it is some type of bacteria infection and this should clear it up.

I had this problem when I kept fish - especially with my bettas and one of my goldfish.

I'm not sure what causes it or even what it is, but I do know that I treated it as if it were tailrot. You should be able to find antibiotics to put in the tank at a pet supply store - WalMart even carries some, at least mine does.

My fish always got worse before they got better. The goldfish lost his tail four or five times, it always grew back though and was longer (and prettier) each time it regrew.

Wow, your undesirable fish. First, you like a heater, a very submergible one if achievable. The temperature fluctuations (putting in heat water and then it get chilly, put in heat water and so on.) is killing him. he's probably in marvel from that fluctuation on my own. He should be stored at a slow 76F-80F tiers all the time, with little or no longer fluctuation. Letting him get so chilly lowers his resistence and then issues take earnings of that and make him ill. until eventually you get a tank heater, objective an incandescent lamp close to to the tank and it will advance the water temp some tiers, fish will probably stay at present below the sunshine by way of warmth. All fish carry around micro organism and fungus and issues yet while they're healthful their organic resistence keeps all those issues at bay yet while they get chilled and all that, the baddies take over and the fish can no longer combat them off anymore. If he's bloating and if his scales are increasing up, then that is probably dropsy--interior the two a protracted time i've got been breeding bettas, i've got by no skill popular everybody who "cured" their betta from dropsy. that is micro organism and maximum fish carry it around interior regularly and it in hassle-free terms turns right into a project while the micro organism substitute into viralent. in view that your guy continues to be ingesting, attempt soaking his nutrients in a fish antibiotic (penicillin, kanacyn, and so on.) in the previous feeding him to attempt to get the medicine interior of him (he could dislike the flavor and spit his nutrients out nevertheless, start to no longer even consume his nutrients).
