leigha--I do NOT mean 'crisps',as in potato chips on my side of the Atlantic. It is goldfish food with a crispier texture than the flakes--that is why they are called crisps.

I do not recommend flakes, 1. they are usually lower quality 2. they go rancid very quickly.
Find a good food and you are going to have to read the ingredients. Don't over look tropical fish food either. You want to see stuff like fish meal, krill, spirolina, basically a good seafood buffet!! What you don't want is ANYTHING corn related, no corn gluten meal, that sort of thing. Ideally you want at least 30% protien and 10% fat. Protien makes them grow. Make sure you replace your dry food monthly it does go bad. Floating fish doesn't come from over feeding it comes from rancid food. Replace the food often and you will NEVER get floaters. Pellet food that sinks is better. HBH makes good stuff look for the HBH Super Soft foods I and my goldies live by it. And yes its tropical fish food.
You can also feed them orange with skin off, peas out of the shell, any seafood for human consumption like shrimp and crab (and immitation), banana, broccoli, anything clean and healthy is usually ok. Hope this helps. They need vitamin C.

the problem with flakes is its hard to monitor how many flakes is lunch -- crisps are a much easier measure. it is also good to feed the fish a variety of greens (cooked greens -- lettuce, spinach, kale, peas, zucchini -- almost anything green), oranges, frozen foods like bloodworms and daphnea are good too. occasionally feeding green peas (cut up with outside skin removed) is thought to be extrememly beneficial in keeping the fish safe from swim bladder and constipation.

I would go for the crisps as long as the fish is large enough to handle them easily. Like G said above flakesare hard to measure.
