I got a goldfish yesterday and he seems to just be hanging out at bottom of tank and seems scared when I turn the light on. Is that normal, is it just getting used to new surrounding? It's the only fish in tank. 10 gal tank

Yeah, completely normal. It will take him some time to adjust..maybe a day, maybe a week you can't really tell for sure but eventually he will settle down. Your fish will also eventually outgrow that 10 gallon tank. An oranda really needs 20 gallons to grow to full size and be comfortable.

Normal, it does take a while for a fish to acclimate to it's new tank. One thing that I will tell you, a 10 gallon tank is not big enough for a full grown oranda. Orandas get pretty big, and being goldfish are quite dirty. They need 20+ gallons.

it takes about a week for a fish to become fully accustomed to their new tank.

how did you prepare the tank before you put the goldfish in? is it filtered and was it cycled? i would check water parameters just in case, essential in a new tank set up anyway. especially if he's acting lethargic and hanging near the bottom. 10 gallons will eventually be too small for him.

yeah you're spot on it'll just be getting use to you.....make sure its got somewhere to hide (you can get ace big fake plants from the shops) if the bits in your tank go green you can use an old toothbrush (rinse it well first) and cold water to clean it, it comes up really nice. If you're going to get him friends watch you don't have common gold fish with fantails (fat little fish) cos the faster ones will try eat all the food....if you do just make sure they get some!!

basically think of roughly it this way: Your goldfish is scared for countless motives: they think of that is in possibility while human beings come close to the tank. yet "you" on the different hand know which you will safeguard the fish, and by no skill harm them. they're in sturdy hands. basically enable them to be scared. you know by way of fact the "proprietor" that each little thing would be o.k.. :)
