We just bought 3 small (3 inches) koi and have them in a 50 gallon tank for now with 2 bubble stones and the best filter (so we are told)out there for the tank. The fish seem to love it and we are NOT going to add more fish. We added the necessary bacteria for the tank and all seems well. Can anyone give me some advice on raising them? Thanks.

the next morning its at 80 then goes down to 72 again. does covering the tank at night change the temp? any other reason why it might fluctuate so much?

I bought another betta he's kind of small and he doesn't "fan out" when I put the fish bowls side by side. The fish I had first reacts quite well how most do. My new little betta doesn't get it yet... any clues as to why?

i can not find a way to get enough watts per gallon in my 29 gallon freshwater community tank! i plan on turning it into a planted aquarium soon so i need more light....
i have and 18" tubes which i think is 15 watts....i dont want to but whole new light hood thing or watevr....*where are some good places to find compact fleurescent lights for an aquarium?* like one that perches on the side of the aquarium or is a pendent lamp.
*also whats a good brand of full spectrum light bulb?*
i am also having problems deciding on what fish i should get...i have 4 guppies, 5glolite tetras, 2 shrimp, 1 snail, 1 african dwarf frog, I plan on getting 2-3 Otos to help keep the tank algae-free when i get all the plants. I want teh fish to pretty much all be from south america or mexico(that general area)....*whats another type of fish thats from that area that would look good swimming through driftwood rox and plants?*
*also whats a good way to get more filtration in my tank?*

Okay, I just bought a nice orange (with a little sea blue) beta one hour ago. I put him in a one and a half gallon tank. He seems to be getting used to his new home (I bet he hated his squishy little bowl I bought him in). Anyway, I just want to know all about taking care of him. Please serious info (I would like it if you could provide some useful links.)

1)I would like to know about the water temperature. I heard that you're supposed to put the water temperature around 80. I don't have a thermometer right now. How do I know if it is right with my hands? It's currently a cross between cold and warm.
2)How much to feed? I suppose that since he came from the store, he's not hungry?
3)I see small little tiny bubbles surrounding the tank. What is it?
4)Is he supposed to move around a lot or only once in a few minutes?
5)How do I know if he's happy?
6)Will he begin to recodnize me? Or do fish have low memory?
7) And if the water is pretty cold, what will happen?

Thanks to all.

Does anyone know what it means when your goldfish begins to turn brown on the top of its body? Does that mean that it's going to lay eggs?

I have a nice sized purple sabae anemone and it loves to eat live gold fish and it's pretty cool to watch. How does the anemone actually digest? My shrimp will eat goldfish to is that weird? It's pretty cool when it cleans my hand also.

I've become rather partial to them, so I'd hate to give them up. But I don't want to do anything that will kill them either.

I own 1 male betta who is not as aggressive as some of my former males. I am well aware that you should not put other males with him and I dont, I dont put any other fish with him either.

I went to wal mart last night and bought a Female betta thinking maybe he would like some companionship and I think he liked her alot.
They didnt fight at all and it actually seemes as if he was flirting with her, kinda showing off. She didnt fight or anything either, However she seemed to always stay at the bottom well hidden from him. she even got under a sea shell and stayed for awhile.

She came up a few times and they never once fought. I decided She didnt really like it in there with him so I took her out but she seems to act the same way by herself.

Id rather her be in the tank with lighting and air which is his tank than be in the bowl shes in now.Do you think it would be ok to put her back with him also how about her being in my large tank with goldfish and angel? Thanks

This is my first time having fish - I don't think it's prego. I'm not even sure if it's female?!
I got them Monday, two white cloud minnows (who live with 3 Zebra Danios). When I first got them, they were both the exact same size, one of them looks like it's colours are SLIGHTLY brighter, but its so slight I'm not even sure if its my eyes playing a trick on me.
Anyways, yesterday I didn't notice anything, but this morning when I was looking at them I realized one is a tad bit bigger now. A bit larger in length, as well as height. The belly looks a little swollen, but not that much at all - I don't think it's enough to hold eggs, and I do realize the eggs are almost microscopic.

Like I said, this is my first time - what do you think?

Also - I'm interested in breeding, atleast attempting to (I heard pet stores will take them from you), how many tanks do you suggest, and what size (gals) do you think?

I have heard that there is a capsule that you drop into the tank that will take care of their feeding. Do you know where I might purchase this, if in fact, it exists?

My six year old sister is looking into getting a fish. She's very responsible, and she already owns a hamster, dog, and mouse. She loves and cares for them all, feeding and changing thier cages on a regular basis. She really wants goldfish, but I'm not sure if they will live too long. What's a good first time, not so expensive fish that can live in a slightly small tank that lacks a heater and air pump? I had a betta in the tank and it did very well.
