Yes covering the tank with a towel at night, especially during the winter, will keep the water warm. However, the water temperature will change according to the temperature of the room. If it gets to cold cover it with a towel. Hope that helps!

How big is the tank? How big is the heater? How much does the room temp fluctuate? I'm afraid the heater is suffering from bad thermostat disease.Get a new one.If the temperature in the room is fairly stable a heater rated at 5 watts/gallon should be OK. If the room gets much cooler at night 7 to 10 watts/gallon is more appropriate. If you can swing it get one of the newer ones with a stainless steel tube and a separate thermostat. They work better and last longer and are safer.-----PeeTee

If it is in sunlight it might heat up the water really fast and even though the heater turned off the water didn't get a chance to cool. The same thing could happen because of the room temperature. At night you might get a slightly more accurate reading. Check it at night a few nights in a row and make sure the temperature readings are similar so that you know if the heater is malfunctioning or not.

Is it an inexpensive heater? Might have a bad thermostat, I would replace it ASAP with a high quality one, this is not an area to try to find a bargain. A good heater will cycle on/off at + or - 2 degrees. For example if you set it at 70 your temp should range from 68 to 72.

Good luck!

Room temp during the day will change the tank temp. The nicer heaters have a thermostat that should regulate it better. It's possible it's gotten old, or it has a defective thermostat. I'd get a new one.

our tank temp changes sometimes depending on the temp of the apt. It mostly changes a few degrees when it is very cold out side. Our tank is at 80 degrees because we have plecos. Some mornings i wake up and it dropped to 77 degrees because of the cold.
