i was thinking of buying one. but i'm not too sure how good they are for keeping golfish (i want to put 1 ryukin into it along with a few snails to keep it clean). Would biorb fish bowls be a suitable environment for goldfish?

Ryukins needs about 10gallons to themselves when young and about 20+ gallons when full grown. like all goldfish they need really good filters.

if you get the 16gallon one you may be able to keep one Ryukin, but you'll most likely have to get it an actually tank when it gets older. you'll need a good filter and very good aeration, you might wan to think about two air stones.

the average 8 gallon biorb is suitable for 4ish tropical schooling fish if you get the heater for it. ex: mollies, platies, tetra, female bettas

4 gallon biorb is really only suitable for a betta. most tropical fish are schooling fish and need other fish of it's kind. betta males however can't be kept with any other bettas, so it is perfectly fine to house them in a heater filtered tank by themselves.

if you have your heart set on a Ryukin give it a proper home. get it a 20gallon fish tank (save you money in the long run instead of having to by another tank later) for just him or 30-40gallon tank for 3 or 4 Ryukins. be sure to get a good filter and aerate the water very well.

It isn't the shape of the tank, more the size, filtration and heating that are lacking in "bowls." Almost all "bowls" are under 2 gallons, are terribly hard to filter, and properly heating 2 gallons or less is pretty impossible. The more expensive biorbs of larger volume have over 2 gallons, are filtered, and can be heated, thus they remove the limits on bowls. A 30 liter filtered and heated biorb is just fine for a betta and even some shrimp!

Biorbs look cool and funky, but they are a massive waste of money, for the money you can get a much bigger traditional square tank. Also the filtration is not up supporting goldfish who are messy little biggers and produce a lot of waste.

You will end up with all kinds of problems.

No, if you research the life span, potential size, and messy nature of a Goldfish you'll quickly realize they do need a real aquarium.

The pet shop is not a good place to ask for advice because it is completely unreliable - many imployees don't know anything and management will tell you whatever you need to hear to spend money. They also often have displays that would and could not work long term, so they are no guide either.

Biorb tanks look really cool but I have heard that it is really hard to find replacement parts for them. For a gold fish, you need about a 20 gallon aquarium.

I think molly meant Sell you. Most of the people at the big box pet store will be selling cat halters or dog biscuits tomorrow and probably know nothing about fish and don't care to learn. Get your advice from someone who has nothing to sell. --------PeeTee

Nah, they're crap. Gone are the days of fish bowls. Get yourself a proper aquarium set up.

I saw several in a pet store display that had goldfish in them so I assume it should be fine. However, from what I've heard, fish bowls are really horrible for the fish so maybe get an aquarium instead.
