Fish - December 2006

I had African cichlids in there before I moved...they started breeding like crazy, ended up buying a 20 gallon just for the frie! I really liked their colors and characteristics...I hated the fact that I had to stick with their species and not make the variety a little broader.

Anyway, I kind of got sick of the aggression and the fighting over the females, had to seclude some of the more aggressive males every once in a while.

I guess a community tank would be ok...but when I go that route, I still tend to want to get some semi-aggressive fish that end up picking on the less-aggressive.

Any ideas on some good colorful fish for a community setting?

Do betta fish only make their bubble nests in a styrophone cup, or will they make them some other way. Will they still make them in a tank with a filter running, one of those filters that runs the water over the side of the tank into the water, sort of like a waterfall. I was just curious, kind of bored, so i wanted to just do some cool research ;)

I've had my betta for 4 months and about 1.5 weeks ago I noticed this white thing coming from her stomach. It looks like a piece of cottage cheese kind of...She's acting normal and looks normal otherwise. Should I be worried? What should I do??

Hubby wants aquarium for Christmas. We are looking at something large, at least 55gal, or maybe 125 or even 150. Went to 2 pet stores today, got the basic info, some printed stuff, etc. Now we want to hear it from you....what's REALLY involved? Do you change the water weekly, monthly, do you change 10%, 25%, what? How much time do you truly spend in maintainence? We are seriously doing this, just want to know the difference between "salesman lines" and REALITY!!:)) Also, good sites for kinds and compatability of fish. How many, etc. (This is for fresh water tank.) How long did it take to set up? And what is this about "cycling"? Is there anything I should know that the stores or printed info didn't tell me? Also, after the initial purchase, what is the biggest expense? Thanks!!

What kind of fish or such could I put in a one and a half gallon tank? I was wanting a Betta would that be ok? I love Bettas! Ne who just wanna know so i dont make a mistake a buy somthing not good for that tank.Thanx!

I feed him flakes made for betas. But he is having difficulty eating it..everytime he grabs a flake, he spits it out in pieces while chewing. I'm afraid he will starve or not get enough nutrients. He swims in a certain pattern around the aquarium plant to indicate that he wants food - that's when I feed him.

What should I feed him? The flakes not working and I can tell from his behavior.

My fish, Carlton, has lost his color and will barely eat. He basically lays at the bottom of the fishbowl. I actually thought he was dead yesterday. I have been neglectful to him, not changing his water frequently enough and accidently skipping feedings. I really don't want him to die, how can I nurse him back to health?

This tank is 36" long, 18" deep, and 24" tall. Filtration is an Aqua-Clear 70/300 power filter. Ph is about 7.5. It will be a species tank. I am cycling right now and preparing to transfer 4 Buenos Aires tetras from their current 20-gallon.
